This is a greatest hits album and it’s perfect. Twelve songs and they’re all great. Kristofferson is the ultimate example of nontoxic masculinity. Tough but sensitive. Rugged but gentle. The fourth album by the guy who gave country music the “illusion of literacy” according to Tom T. Hall. And yeah, Kristofferson is as smart, good-looking and talented as anybody who ever did it, the lucky son of a bitch. The title track is “owed to John Prine” and you can hear why.
