CW: Indonesian election laws challenged in court
Members of PDIP and NasDem are challenging the election laws to turn back the clock to the Soeharto era
KPU Chief Hasyim Asy’ari threw a wrench into the 2024 election preparation when he said that the people could be voting for political parties again instead of individual legislative candidates, similar to how it was done in the old days.
While the current method is hailed as being more democratic and more representative, there are those who prefer the old way arguing that it reduces political expenditure and returns the focus to the power hungry parties instead of power hungry individuals.
Members of PDIP and NasDem parties are filing a challenge to the Constitutional Court looking to change election laws so people vote for political parties as they did when Soeharto was in power, instead of directly voting for legislative candidates.
They argue that the election laws requiring an open ballot of candidates go against the 1945 Constitution and political party mechanisms by presenting individuals as representatives instead of the parties themselves when the actual participants of elections are the parties, not the individuals.
Meanwhile, NasDem is officially opposed to the change, calling the head of the KPU "offside" for even entertaining the idea and will take action against its member who filed the challenge, according to party Secretary General Johnny G. Plate.
Golkar Party Council Chief Dave Laksono also criticized the views held by the KPU chief calling it elitist and irrelevant in the current democratic climate. He said returning to the old ways will revoke the rights of the people and allow parties to make decisions without listening to the will of the people.
