This morning's walk included seeing three kōtare and a korimako, as well as countless tūī, and various other song birds. I stood looking up to find which bird was exercising its vocal range and marvelled at all the trills and sounds coming from one small camouflaged bird.

My local Kōtare/Kingfisher just surprised me. Flew at the window and heard it “hit” but then it went and landed on a post and had a praying mantis in its beak. And now it just flew through the top of a rose bush and came out with another bug. This is fun. Front row seat.

Spot the kingfisher... it's pretty well hidden once it lands in the trees but I have definitely learned where to look when I am out walking near the river.

Two there to greet me today... actually, one flew decoy along the path ahead of me. Further proof of my suspicion of a nest being nearby.

What a beautiful morning walk, bellbird, kingfisher and tūī to enjoy, paradise ducks on the river, blossoms out, trees just starting to get new leaves and only a little bit of rain starting to fall.

I saw this kingfisher a number of times today, well hidden in the branches of the gum tree.

Sky had a lovely time trying to engage in play with a Huntaway cross who was Frisbee fixated.

What a challenge to photograph a family of #kōtare (sacred kingfishers) nesting in my garden! The only lens I have that was up to the task must be focused manually, so to succeed I had to observe them for a long time and become very familiar with their routines. I then set up the camera on a tripod, focused on a spot in a tree that they returned to over and over, and waited. This is a young one.
