I watched 歩いても 歩いても (Still Walking) tonight, one of the few Kore-eda films I haven't seen before. And it's incredible, there's something so special about his films, even if I can't quite say how.
This film (with many of his other films) is warm-hearted and yet the very opposite of saccharine or sickly sweet. I'm no movie buff but can't think of a director whose movies I love more.

怪物 (Monster) is incredible. Can't really say much without spoilers, but it's the same story told from three different perspectives, so what starts off as seemingly clear-cut becomes increasingly complex (and intriguing). And I don't know how he does it, but the way Koreeda works with children, and what he gets out of it as a result, is something I don't think any other filmmaker I know of even comes close.

Even though I rarely re-watch films, I make some (very few) exceptions.
I had a lot of time flying back from Tokyo today, and badly missed Japan even before I even properly left it, so decided to re-watch 是枝裕和 (Koreeda Hirokazu)'s 「海町diary」 ("Our Little Sister" in English).
It only made me miss Japan even more (so it didn't really work in that sense 😅), but it's just the most wonderful, sad, but heartwarming film. I love most of Koreeda's films, but I'm quite sure this is my favourite, and it's really just one of my favourite films overall.

Not a supernatural drama despite what the title and premise might suggest; instead, a really wonderfully realized drama about family, morality, growing up, and the way kids try to make sense of the world around them.
