July 27, 1953 - After three years of bloody and frustrating war leading to stalemate, the United States, the People’s Republic of China and North Korea agreed to a truce, bringing the Korean War—and America's first experiment with the Cold War concept of “limited war”—to an end (South Korean President Syngman Rhee opposed the truce and refused to sign). U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower had taken office six months earlier, and Soviet leader Josef Stalin had died that March.
The armistice signed this day ended hostilities and created the 4000-meter-wide (2.5 miles) demilitarized zone (DMZ), a buffer between North and South Korean forces, but was not a permanent peace treaty. It also set up a system for exchanging prisoners of war: 12,000 held by the North, 75,000 by South Korea, the U.S. and the U.N. allied forces.
There were four million military and civilian casualties, including 16,000 from countries which were part of the U.N.-allied forces; 415,000 South and 520,000 North Koreans died. There were also an estimated 900,000 Chinese casualties. 36,516 died out of the nearly 1.8 million Americans who served in the conflict.

On this day in history. 73 years ago today, on 27 July 1953, an armistice brought about a cease-fire in the Korean War. This is the poignant Scottish Korean War Memorial in the Bathgate Hills near Linlithgow. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/linlithgow/koreanwarmemorial/index.html

Apr 9, 1951 #KoreanWar NYT They display major extraneous elements reminiscent of Soviet warfare both against Hitler during WWII and in the earlier Russian civil war conflict. There were many reports in the early stages of the war that Russian advisers accompanied North Korean troops and directed their movements even down to the regimental levels-none of which has yet been corroborated.

Apr 8, 1951 #KoreanWar NYT Rumors of disciplinary action against General of the Army Douglas MacArthur for publicly disputing current Administration policies abroad ranged from the relatively mild possibility that the United Nations commander would get a sharp verbal rebuke from President Truman to the more drastic possibility that he would be relieved of his command.

Mar 31, 1951 #KoreanWar NYT As advances were made by late afternoon along this front and a patrol pushed closer to the former border between North and South Korea, it became likely that a crossing soon was possible. Never since the beginning of this war has there been a greater number of nationalities in the allied front lines. In the United Nations representation, units from Belgium, France, the Republic of Korea, Britain, the Philippines, Turkey, Thailand and Canada now face the enemy.

Mar 26, 1951 #KoreanWar TIME The fourth fall of Seoul was a sad business, something like the capture of a tomb. Only 200,000 of Seoul’s original 1,500,000 population were still there. Seoul residents said that in late February and early March the Communists ordered all men aged 15 to 40 and women 16 to 25 to go north.

Mar 25, 1951 #KoreanWar NYT General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and official Washington were feuding again today. Source of the trouble this time was General MacArthur's truce offer yesterday to the Chinese Communists. Washington's complaint: it wasn't consulted on the statement and wouldn't have approved the statement if it had been.

Mar 10, 1951 #KoreanWar NYT The Chinese Communists pulled back yesterday on the central Korean front in what appeared to be a general withdrawal before the United Nations offensive. The United Nations forces made gains of up to four miles as they pressed a pincer attack on Hongchon, twenty miles south of the Thirty-eighth Parallel.

During the #KoreanWar (1950-1953), approximately 37,000 #Americans were killed defending #democracy in #SouthKorea from invasion by #NorthKorea - supported by the #SovietUnion and #China with weapons and ‘boots on the ground’.
Yet as the #UnitedStates prepares to ‘celebrate’ our 250th anniversary, people are literally fighting #American government forces in the streets of #Minneapolis and other cities to be less like #NorthKorea and #Russia and more like #SouthKorea.

Çin Komutanı 'Türkleri Atlayın' Emri Verdi! 😮 Askerler 'Neden?' Diye Sordu!
Kasım 1950'de 60.000 Çinli asker 5.000 Türk'ü kuşatmıştı.
Türkler süngü hücumuyla çemberi yarmış ve dışarı çıkmıştı.
Çin raporlarında "Türk direnci beklenmedik derecede inatçıydı. Takviye olmadan saldırı önerilmez" yazıyordu.
