Moser (1868-1918) was a founder of the Vienna Secession, but later left it as an organization...although he was later praised for his Art Nouveau styling and the two are pretty much the same thing, if you ask me.
The painting is a scene from an opera, where the vengeful Isolde convinces Tristan to drink what she thinks is poison, as she holds him responsible for the death of her previous fiance, Morold. But the poison was switched with a love potion by her maid, and the two fall under its spell, and everything is a mess afterwards.
The color choices here are strange, but memorable. Isolde's dramatic pose seems almost comical, but it does have a certain interest. I almost didn't feature this, but I thought, what the heck...

He also designed furniture, stained glass, jewelry, mosaics, household goods, and even dabbled in architecture. His design work appeared on Austro-Hungarian postage stamps and even the 1911 Austro-Hungarian Imperial 50-crown note.
My favorite art movement, the Nabis, believed in incorporating art into everyday life, and Moser certainly subscribed to that belief! It's easy to take design work for granted, but it has a huge impact on daily life.
