My pick for this week's #MusicWomenWednesday is a video from the 1967 American Folk and Blues Festival. This is Koko Taylor doing a live version of her great hit from the previous year, backed by a stellar group of musicians including Little Walter on harmonica, Hound Dog Taylor on guitar, Dillard Crume on bass and Odie Payne on drums.

This line-up even visited Finland, playing a show at Kulttuuritalo in Helsinki on October 12, 1967.

Musical Interlude: The hot humid weather we're having here has put me in a blues mood...and now I'm remembering this impressive duet...

Musical Interlude: Happened to listen to this lady today, one of the all-time greats. She had pipes like no other, and here she is declaring herself to the world....

Musical Interlude: Here's something pretty harrowing and intense, and it's a great demonstration of the serious pipes on the lady singing here, the late Koko Taylor. Be careful if you have headphones on...she could blow out your eardrums.

@markmetz @vinylrecords I lucked into seeing #KokoTaylor live in 1989, naive and not really knowing who she was. She was of course amazing, and it was a transformative memory for me.

Musical Interlude: Listened to the Queen of the Blues today. Koko Taylor had a long career, from the 60s to the 21st century. Before she died in 2009, she was rightly acknowledged as a legend. Here's a sample from a live album, the track that introduced me to her.

"I'd Rather Go Blind," performed by Koko Taylor.
