  1. Japan is marking Children's Day on Tuesday. About 1,000 carp-shaped streamers are on display near a Tokyo landmark to wish for the healthy growth of children.

Crowds flocked to Tokyo Skytree in Sumida Ward for the annual event. The colorful streamers fluttered in the wind at the foot of the 634-meter tower, setting up a perfect photo opportunity for families and tourists.

  2. This is one of a series, each unique, of my hand made cyanotypes on watercolour paper (14” x 11”) with an image of a cloud-filled sky overprinted with my linocut print of several kites, and wind-socks each collaged with beautiful Japanese washi papers.

The carp-shaped Koinobori wind socks (also known as satsuki-nobori) are flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku, or Children’s Day each May 5.

  7. With plenty of afternoon left we walked ~25mins to see the #KoiNoBori at #TokyoTower - there wasn't much and the traditional children's games were all closing. Cue tears.

Plan B, go up the tower! Top deck was sold out until about 8pm, so we did just the main deck. Youngest surprised us by wanting to go up the stairs and led the way - all 600 steps! Obviously recharged after being carried to the tower..

  8. We visited the display of ~100 #KoiNoBori at "MIDTOWN OPEN THE PARK 2026" in Roppongi as suggested at trip.iko-yo.net/articles/387 - pleasant, and there was a beer festival too but didn't sample anything. Lots of little children paddling in the water features. We got ice cream from a conbini store to eat in the lovely weather.

  9. Good morning from Japan! Golden Week continues with Children's Day today. This is the time of year when koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks 🎏) abound around the country. Here is a specimen from Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.

  10. Saw a couple of Taro Okamoto designs (like the ones shown in Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum's "Art in Daily Life" Exhibition) mingling with tradition carp streamers flying from a local apartment balcony🙂

  12. The 18th Kanda River Koi-no-Bori Festival.

Children's handmade cute carp streamers 🎏 are swimming in the Kanda River next to Mitakadai Station (~5/10)

Carp streamers are also placed on the streetlights!

  14. I printed my kite linocut on watercolour (without cyanotype*) and collaged Japanese papers too!

*previous (and future planned iterations of this print) are made on cyanotypes of a cloudy sky

  15. I made a second cyanotype of a cloudy sky printed with my Lino block with several different kites and wind socks. Then I printed my block on various beautiful patterned and coloured Japanese washi papers, and collaged them on my image. I did a little embellishment with Posca pen.

The koï-shaped wind socks are traditionally flown in Japan on Children’s Day, May 5.

  16. I felt my cyanotype of a cloudy sky needed more, so I carved a Lino block with several different kites and wind socks and printed it in hill ink over the cyanotype. Then I printed my block on various beautiful patterned and coloured Japanese washi papers, and collaged them on my image. I did a little embellishment with Posca pen. I’m planning a series of these prints.

  17. These flying fish are new on my bike ride to work. A string of fantastic fish-themed wind socks fly on a power pole in the middle of farmland south of Lincoln, NZ.

These little things really brighten up a place, plus it's always windy here.

I've learned that they're #koinobori, 'carp streamer' in Japanese. They even have an emoji: 🎏

Wikipedia says koinobori were "originally exclusive to samurai households". Perhaps a samurai dairy farmer has arrived.
