  1. Undertake a journey

I took [Judith Wright’s] reply to mean that for certain kinds of knowledge you have to undertake a journey. It isn’t like pouring water into a bucket—a process by which neither water nor bucket is much changed—It seemed that if I took this journey I would be utterly changed. And before setting out, I couldn’t predict what that change would be.

  2. #Kōans are central to #Zen, especially in the #Rinzai tradition, serving as #meditative tools that disrupt conceptual thinking and provoke direct insight. Far from mere riddles, kōans catalyze a shift beyond dualistic thought, guiding practitioners toward non-conceptual realization. Here is a brief overview of their role and function in Zen practice:

  10. Zen koans paradoxically use language to demonstrate the absurdity and futility of language in recognising the nature of mind.

  12. #vim #koans

    [...]

“Vim is eternally beautiful,” protested the poet. “It is a worthy subject for an ode.”

“Vim is not permanent. nvi is not permanent. vi itself is not permanent, only vi-nature. Emacs has vi-nature, nano has vi-nature, even Notepad has vi-nature. You narrow your sights, you grow attached, and hence you do not grasp the true value of your poem’s subject. You must leave. Come back when you have mastered Emacs.”

The poet left, deeply ashamed. He never returned.

  13. I think "koan"-style tutorials are a great way to kick the tires on a new programming language -- you're presented with suites of failing tests, and by fixing the tests you're taken on a tour of the language.

I helped convert the #CommonLisp #koans to #EmacsLisp awhile back -- if you like TDD and want to learn elisp tis a solid resource.
