A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Yarn Every Time
If you’ve ever walked into a yarn aisle and wondered…
“What’s the difference between acrylic and cotton?”
“Why is this skein $3 while that one costs $18?”
“Can I substitute wool for cotton?”
“What does superwash even mean?”
…you’re not alone.
Understanding yarn fiber is one of the biggest hurdles for new crocheters. The label is packed with unfamiliar terms, every yarn seems to promise something different, and experienced crocheters throw around words like “merino,” “plant fibers,” and “animal fibers” as if everyone should already know what they mean.
The good news?
Once you understand the basic fiber families and how they behave, choosing yarn becomes much easier.
Let’s unravel the mystery.
What Is Yarn Fiber?
Before yarn becomes yarn, it starts as tiny fibers.
Those fibers are cleaned, processed, spun together, and wound into the skeins we buy at the craft store.
The fiber itself determines nearly everything about the finished project:
- softness
- warmth
- durability
- stretch
- drape
- breathability
- absorbency
- washability
- price
Think of fiber as the personality of the yarn.
The weight tells you how thick the yarn is.
The fiber tells you how the yarn behaves.
The Three Main Fiber Categories
Almost every yarn falls into one of three groups.
Animal Fibers
These come from animals.
Examples include:
- Sheep (wool)
- Alpaca
- Cashmere goats
- Angora rabbits
- Mohair goats
- Yak
- Camel
Animal fibers are generally warm, soft, stretchy, and excellent at trapping heat.
Many also have natural elasticity, making them forgiving while crocheting.
They’re perfect for:
- sweaters
- hats
- mittens
- scarves
- blankets for colder climates
Plant Fibers
Plant fibers come from crops rather than animals.
Examples include:
- cotton
- bamboo
- linen
- hemp
- flax
These fibers tend to be:
- breathable
- cool
- absorbent
- less stretchy
Plant fibers are wonderful for:
- dishcloths
- washcloths
- summer garments
- market bags
- baby bibs
- placemats
Because they don’t stretch much, beginners sometimes find them slightly harder to crochet with.
Synthetic Fibers
These are manufactured rather than harvested.
Common examples include:
- acrylic
- polyester
- nylon
- microfiber
Synthetic fibers are usually:
- affordable
- durable
- easy to wash
- colorfast
- widely available
They’re also the yarns most beginners learn with.
Projects include:
- blankets
- toys
- beginner scarves
- hats
- home décor
Fiber Blends
Many yarns combine several fibers together.
For example:
- 80% acrylic / 20% wool
- 50% cotton / 50% acrylic
- wool / nylon sock yarn
- alpaca / silk blends
Manufacturers do this because one fiber can improve another.
Acrylic makes wool easier to wash.
Nylon makes socks stronger.
Cotton adds structure.
Wool adds elasticity.
Sometimes the perfect yarn isn’t one fiber—it’s a combination.
Yarn Fiber Comparison at a Glance
Before we dive into each fiber in detail, here’s a quick reference chart you can bookmark or pin for later. It compares the most common yarn fibers based on softness, warmth, stretch, breathability, washability, durability, affordability, and the types of projects they’re best suited for.
The Most Common Fibers You’ll See
Acrylic
Probably the most common crochet yarn.
Pros:
✔ inexpensive ✔ easy care ✔ washable ✔ huge color selection ✔ beginner friendlyCons:
✘ not very breathable ✘ can pill over time ✘ melts under high heatGreat for:
- blankets
- stuffed animals
- gifts
- learning crochet
Cotton
Cotton is incredibly popular for warm-weather projects.
Pros:
✔ breathable ✔ absorbent ✔ durable ✔ excellent stitch definitionCons:
✘ little stretch ✘ can feel stiff ✘ heavier than acrylicGreat for:
- potholders
- bags
- garments
- kitchen items
Wool
Wool has been used for centuries.
Pros:
✔ warm ✔ stretchy ✔ forgiving ✔ naturally moisture-wicking ✔ resilientCons:
✘ can shrink ✘ may require hand washing ✘ some are sensitive to itGreat for:
- sweaters
- hats
- mittens
- winter accessories
Merino Wool
Merino comes from Merino sheep. It’s much softer than traditional wool.
Pros:
✔ luxurious ✔ soft ✔ warm ✔ elasticCons:
✘ more expensive ✘ often requires gentle carePerfect for garments worn next to the skin.
Alpaca
Alpaca fiber is known for its incredible softness.
Pros:
✔ warm ✔ lightweight ✔ silky feel ✔ beautiful drapeCons:
✘ less elastic than wool ✘ premium priceWonderful for shawls and scarves.
Bamboo
Bamboo yarn is usually processed into rayon before spinning.
Pros:
✔ silky ✔ drapey ✔ cool ✔ breathableCons:
✘ slippery ✘ stretches easilyExcellent for lightweight garments.
What Is Superwash Wool?
You’ll often see “Superwash” on a yarn label.
That doesn’t describe a different sheep.
It means the wool has been specially treated so it can usually be machine washed without felting.
For many crocheters, it offers the warmth of wool with much easier care.
Can You Substitute One Fiber for Another?
Sometimes.
Sometimes not.
Imagine replacing:
- a cotton dishcloth with alpaca
- a wool mitten with cotton
- an acrylic stuffed animal with silk
Each project would behave completely differently.
Fiber substitutions can affect:
- size
- drape
- stretch
- warmth
- durability
- washing instructions
Whenever possible, use a yarn with similar fiber content unless you understand how the change will affect the finished project.
Why Fiber Matters More Than Price
A $20 skein isn’t automatically “better” than a $4 skein.
It’s simply designed for a different purpose.
Acrylic might be the perfect choice for a child’s blanket.
Merino might be perfect for a luxury sweater.
Cotton may be exactly what’s needed for a kitchen towel.
Choosing the right fiber is far more important than choosing the most expensive one.
Beginner Recommendations
If you’re just starting out, here’s a simple guide.
Choose acrylic when you want:
- affordability
- easy care
- practice yarn
- blankets
- toys
Choose cotton when you want:
- kitchen projects
- summer items
- sturdy bags
- crisp stitch definition
Choose wool when you want:
- warmth
- winter accessories
- sweaters
- elasticity
As your crochet skills grow, you’ll naturally branch out into fiber blends and specialty yarns.
Final Thoughts
Learning about yarn fiber might seem overwhelming at first, but it doesn’t have to be.
Every skein has a purpose. Every fiber has strengths. And there isn’t a single “best” yarn—only the best yarn for your project.
The next time you pick up a skein, don’t just look at the color. Flip over the label and check the fiber content. That one little detail tells you a remarkable amount about how your finished project will look, feel, and perform.
Once you start paying attention to fiber, you’ll never shop for yarn the same way again.
📚 Coming Up Next in the Masterclass Series
Now that you know what yarn is made of, it’s time to learn how yarn is classified.
In the next Masterclass, we’ll dive into yarn weights—from lace to jumbo—and explain what those numbers and symbols on the label really mean. You’ll learn how yarn weight affects gauge, drape, hook size, and why using the wrong weight can completely change the outcome of a project.
Subscribe so you don’t miss the next installment of the Yarn Masterclass Series. Every lesson builds on the last, helping you become a more confident, knowledgeable crocheter—one skein at a time.

I’ve had this problem with big holes in my #knitting when doing increases, and I ‘think’ I’ve fixed it.
I think it’s because I’ve been using twisted stitches without realising, anyone else have this problem?I go through the whole descent into madness/ fixing and learning in my first vid, if you want to watch me trying to work stuff out (link in the usual place, if you’re interested and want to weigh in)
