La fiebre del oro del Klondike.
En 1898 se dirigió hacia el norte, atravesó el paso de Chilkoot y llegó a Dawson City.
Allí volvió a hacer lo que mejor sabía hacer: montar un negocio y buscar oro al mismo tiempo.
Abrió un restaurante y también consiguió una concesión minera.
Una mujer irlandesa que había llegado a Estados Unidos huyendo de las consecuencias de una de las mayores tragedias de la historia de Irlanda había terminado buscando oro en el Yukón.
No está mal para una vida.
Durante sus últimos años siguió moviéndose entre Alaska, Canadá y la costa del Pacífico.
Finalmente se instaló en Victoria, Columbia Británica.
Murió allí el 4 de enero de 1925.
Tenía alrededor de 79 años.
Para entonces ya era conocida con varios sobrenombres: el «Ángel de Tombstone», el «Ángel de Cassiar» o el «Ángel de los mineros».
Pero quizá esos nombres se quedan cortos.
Porque Nellie Cashman no fue solamente una mujer caritativa que ayudaba a mineros enfermos.
También fue una mujer que hizo dinero, compró y vendió negocios, invirtió en minas, recorrió territorios peligrosos y tomó decisiones que en aquella época muchos hombres tampoco se habrían atrevido a tomar.
Y hay algo que me parece especialmente interesante de su historia.
Nellie nunca necesitó convertirse en «la mujer de alguien» para que su vida tuviera sentido.
Fue Nellie Cashman.
Y punto.
Una inmigrante irlandesa que llegó a Estados Unidos siendo joven y terminó convirtiéndose en una de las mujeres más conocidas de la frontera minera.
No sabemos cuánto de las historias que circulan sobre ella es completamente cierto.
Pero sí sabemos algo bastante más interesante:
lo que hizo de verdad ya era suficientemente extraordinario.

The opening image, in fact, is based on a photo of prospectors in Chilkoot Pass! The forests and mountains are heavily inspired by #Banff.
