Do you use #kiva, or have you used it?

In #kiva you can choose the countries you prefer to loan to.
I tend to avoid loans in the US (but that's a personal preference of course) and I look for loans in countries where I haven't lent to yet. 9% of my loans were in Kenya.
You can also choose the sectors you prefer to support. Attached a breakdown of my portfolio
85% of my loans were to women.
I've loaned to several beauty salons, but not to any bookstore yet!

In #kiva you don't earn any interest on the loan. The best thing that can happen is that it's returned.
However, some times you lose money:
- A little, due to the currency rates changing (less than 1% of the total lent)
- A bit more, due to lack of repayments (defaults). In my portfolio, around 3%Some other money is late on repayments, around 8% of the total.
However, THIS IS FINE. Some loans are done to very difficult regions in the world, in crisis, after disasters. It's normal.

KIVA is crowdfunding for microcredits. I've been using it since november 2007, that's more than 18 years!
Here are some stats about how I use it:
- I've contributed to 1305 loans, usually $25 to each.
- I have around $3k in the system, but as they have been relended several times, I've lended for a total value of $33k
- I have contributed to loans in 79 different countries(cont.)

Just saw a Kiva loan request come across my feed, so I looked into it. Long article linked.
TL;DR: Kiva started out as a great idea, but has shifted to distinctly for profit. Lenders are not actually giving money to the loan request, but to a pool of money distributed by a mega Corp. Borrowers are charged up to 8% interest. The CEO is making six figures.
Shady and misleading. Very disappointing.
