In #kiva you can choose the countries you prefer to loan to.
I tend to avoid loans in the US (but that's a personal preference of course) and I look for loans in countries where I haven't lent to yet. 9% of my loans were in Kenya.
You can also choose the sectors you prefer to support. Attached a breakdown of my portfolio
85% of my loans were to women.
I've loaned to several beauty salons, but not to any bookstore yet!

Just saw a Kiva loan request come across my feed, so I looked into it. Long article linked.
TL;DR: Kiva started out as a great idea, but has shifted to distinctly for profit. Lenders are not actually giving money to the loan request, but to a pool of money distributed by a mega Corp. Borrowers are charged up to 8% interest. The CEO is making six figures.
Shady and misleading. Very disappointing.

I'm a soft-hearted nerd and for years I've made #Kiva #microloans whenever I've had one repaid.
I'm poor so that $25 has to work its way back for me, but so far I've supported people (often self-employed) in 11 countries.
Today I added Colombia to that list, bumping it up to 12: and this time it's about #solarpower! ☀️

One thing I can't stand about #bigtech and #streaming platforms is how easy they make it to sign up or add credit, but the ridiculous number of steps they put in to withdraw credit or unsubscribe.
Even #Kiva requires so much to withdraw, but will take your money with just an (accidental) click.
