I've got nothing positive to say about the colonialist programme with which he's most associated but #Kipling's short stories are a marvel. His prose is so controlled and modern, he throws us into minimally specified contexts, and he can sketch a character or mood with just a few words.
One example I've always loved is his Dayspring Mishandled (from Limits and Renewals). There's so much going on with this story.

Recently I wrote, and then copy-and-pasted to a variety of places, about how #creationist and other #antiscience #propaganda is often “horrible effective.” That was supposed to be “horribly effective,” of course. On #Facebook and #Quora I can edit it, but on #Mastodon I can’t.
So I think I’ll just leave it in place. It has the ring of a missing couplet from #Kipling’s #Tommy: “Ken ‘Am’s lies is bloomin’ everywhere / An’ ‘orrible effective too!” Seems like it fits my life.

The Croatian cellist #Hauser performing the #Benedictus from “The Armed Man” by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. The work is subtitled "A Mass for Peace" and is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo War.
