Our first king cake of the season is from Tartine, in Greenville, New Orleans, recommended by some friends.
From appearances, I was expecting something like a usual New Orleans king cake but better - but it is different, seems more pastry than brioche dough - whatever they do works well.

Importantly (not universally observed, but an old tradition I've always encouraged): Whoever gets "the baby" is also the monarch of the day/event.
Have a costume or cardboard crown ready for them to wear!
