  1. "The Lady of Shallott," John William Waterhouse, 1888.

Although he was never actually a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which split up while he was a child, Waterhouse (1849-1917) adopted their style with enthusiasm and is now strongly associated with them.

He loved painting scenes from Shakespeare and from famous poems, and this is from a popular poem by Tennyson, about a woman who is under a curse and can only look at the world through a mirror, or else she would die. She spends her time weaving a tapestry of what she sees. Finally, she decides to face the world, no matter the consequences, and sets off in a boat to see Camelot...and then to die.

The colors and subject matter are definitely Pre-Raphaelite, and it's also very naturalistic, with the plants and birds on the river. She sits on the tapestry she wove, which drags in the water. She has a crucifix and three candles on the boat; two of them are out already, indicating her coming death. Her expression is vulnerable and sad; she knows she will die, but feels she has to see the world for herself.

It's an iconic and popular painting, and gorgeous to boot.

    From the Tate Britain, London.

  3. The Questing Beast is a mythical creature with disparate animal parts, symbolizing an unattainable pursuit. Known for its baying sound and elusive nature, it represents themes of sin, desire, and the challenges of Camelot’s knights. #kingarthur connectparanormal.net/2026/06/

  6. King Arthur might be Britain’s best known monarch but he most likely never existed.

The earliest writings about him date from 300 years after he is supposed to have lived, and most historians do not consider him a historical figure.

  16. Hi, everyone! I wanted to say thank you for all of the helpful comments and suggestions for my friend's daughter and her research. You were brilliant! I am most grateful.

FYI, I also recalled that the scholarly journal #Mythlore is now open source and fully searchable, and it is a gold mine! I am sharing the link here in case it is useful to anyone else:

  21. Hi, everyone! I was hoping to crowdsource a thoughtful and thorough answer from some of the most knowledgeable folks I know. The daughter of a good friend of mine -- the daughter is a high school senior who can easily handle college-level reading -- wants to do a major research paper, I quote, "on the women of Avalon in Gawain and the Green Knight and Lanval." She's interested in "how empowered those women are relative to other women (and also the men) in the story." Which secondary sources (online and easily accessible to a high schooler without access to a university library) do you think she should check out? Scholarly articles are most welcome. Thanks so much for any suggestions/links!

  31. John Boorman’s Excalibur (1981) is a slightly divisive Arthurian movie but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses and Boorman couldn't make a dull movie if he tried. Boorman claimed this movie kicked off the sword-and-sorcery boom.
