JAMES CONNOLLY 110th ANNIVERSARY

In the early hours of May 12th 1916, #JamesConnolly, was taken by stretcher from Dublin Castle to the stonebreakers yard in #Kilmainham Jail, strapped to a wooden chair, and executed by a #BritishArmy firing squad.

James Connolly was a Marxist, a patriot, an internationalist and the leader of the revolutionary working class in the #EasterRising. His execution was among the blackest crimes of imperialism against #Ireland and the international socialist movement.

Sadly, the #AuldBitch was not destroyed. 😞 Nor was it reinstalled at ground level, where people could look down at it, and mock it. 😞

Instead, the #NationalMuseumOfIreland put Victoria outside its then storage yard at the Royal Hospital in #Kilmainham.

Éamonn Ceannt was executed on 8 May 1916 in Kilmainham Gaol. He was one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of Independence. Michael Mallin, Cornelius “Con” Colbert and Sean Heuston were also executed on the same day.

Coyle was eventually taken to Mountjoy Prison from which she was transferred to Kilmainham.

Coyle was one of twenty female prisoners to escape on 7 May 1923. She was recaptured the following day however. Coyle was finally released from Kilmainham in December 1923. 4/5
