  2. I was in a webinar today where the presenter recommended MailChimp and Substack as popular newsletter platforms.

I pushed back on Substack, recommended Ghost as an alternative, and said in general terms that tool choice affects branding and reputation, platforms can no longer be assumed to be neutral and it's important to do due diligence on tools. (This is praxis.)

And at the end, everyone shared their work and ayup, someone had a newsletter on Substack.

  3. #InTheGoodOleDays you weren't actually aware of all the awful things going on, and your fondness for that period has more to do with your ignorance than that time being better in any way.

  4. While I understand the impulse to tell fashy dipshits to buy Teslas and use self-driving mode to weed a few of them out, the driver of the Tesla has a substantial safety advantage of weight over occupants of other cars, to say nothing of pedestrians. Yes, Tesla crashes seem to be pretty dangerous for the driver, but I'd rather not encourage them to self-harm by risking others. #subtoot #killjoy

  6. Lunar eclipses are not rare, supermoons are not rare or visibly larger than normal, but having them both at the same time is kinda unusual I guess

  7. @adamshostack A close-up photo of two elevator call buttons against a fabric wall and surrounded by a worn gold-colored metal panel. One button points directly up, as usual, but the second button points down and a bit to the right.

  8. "#GirlMath TikToks offer often spurious explanations of why a splurge purchase decision makes sense, why prepaid Starbucks cards make coffee free, and why paying with a credit card isn’t like using real money. However, #killjoy alert. Take a moment to think about the implicit message that #GirlMath sends. Humorous does not mean harmless."

Just remember, a criminal referral is not the same as seeing him behind bars. At best, I'm thinking he'll die during an extended appeal process. Call me #KillJoy.

Archimedes discovered that if you add the volume of a cone and a sphere, you get the volume of their bounding cylinder. It’s one of the most beautiful results in 3D geometry! Learn more at math.fit/sphere-volume

  16. CW: A long post on safety, comfort, white feminism, and affect aliens, via Sara Ahmed.

"Those who do not sink into spaces, whose bodies are registered as not fitting, often have to work to make others comfortable. Much of what I have called earlier ‘#diversity work’ is thus emotional work.

It follows that if happiness is assumed as a good thing, and some things are made into goods by being associated with happiness, then those who are not made happy by these things are not only alienated by virtue of their affections but become those who alienate others. The affect alien is thus often a #killjoy: the one who gets in the way of the happiness of others or, more simply, the one gets in the way. I have found in the rather animated figure of the killjoy, or to be more specific, the #feminist killjoy (as well as the angry woman of colour as the killer of feminist joy) a certain kind of political potential and energy. To be willing to become a killjoy, to be willing to accept this assignment, is to be willing to get in the way of any happiness that does not have your agreement."

Sara Ahmed, The Cultural Politics of Emotion (Edinburgh University Press, 2004), 224-225.

    .

I am thinking today on "safety" and "safe spaces," and in particular on their framing as being without political inflections or competing meanings. What is safe? Safe for whom? How is safety enforced? Ahmed's notion of the affect alien (and in particular the affect alien as someone who *gets in the way* of other people's happiness) has been really impactful for me. Ahmed's later book The Promise of Happiness (2010) gets further into the affect alien:

Page 41: "Think too of experiences of alienation. I have suggested that happiness is attributed to certain objects that circulate as social goods. When we feel pleasure from such objects, we are aligned; we are facing the right way. We become alienated—out of line with an affective community—when we do not experience pleasure from proximity to objects that are attributed as being good."

    .

Page 67: "The angry black woman can be described as a killjoy; she may even kill feminist joy, for example, by pointing out forms of racism within feminist politics. She might not even have to make any such point to kill joy. You can be affectively alien because you are affected in the wrong way by the right things. Or you can be affectively alien because you affect others in the wrong way: your proximity gets in the way of other people’s enjoyment of the right things, functioning as an unwanted reminder of histories that are disturbing, that disturb an atmosphere. Listen to the following description from bell hooks: 'A group of white feminist activists who do not know one another may be present at a meeting to discuss feminist theory. They may feel they are bonded on the basis of shared womanhood, but the atmosphere will noticeably change when a woman of color enters the room. The white women will become tense, no longer relaxed, no longer celebratory.'"

    .

Back to the Cultural Politics of Emotion, page 28: "If we feel another hurts us, then that feeling may convert quickly into a reading of the other, such that it becomes hurtful, or is read as *the impression of the negative*. In other words, the ‘it hurts’ becomes, ‘you hurt me’, which might become, ‘you are hurtful’, or even ‘you are bad’."
