Ideally, I think it would need to be part of the #fediverse

What if we create a #lemmy or #piefed instance dedicated to selling items.

A forum similar to #kijiji I guess

And then, posts are actually listings from users to sell/buy items.

Communities in lemmy/piefed are actually cities or regions. Maybe categories.

Would that make sense? Would something else do a better job?

Why oh why is a decent recommendation algorithm beyond the skill level of every programmer working on major web sites?

Another example of how pervasive littering with AI outputs makes us dumber: An automated "description" of #Whitehorse on the classifieds website #Kijiji.

When did #kijiji get filled with spammers and scammers?

I've posted a 2008 iMac for sale and have got 3 texts so far (in under an hour) all from US numbers (I'm in Canada). And all seem a bit sketchy using poor English and asking for identity details so they can send a certified cheque.

I've previously sold old kids bikes on Kijiji and only ever dealt with locals. But it has been a few years.

I only buy on #Kijiji as a last resort because many sellers have an inflated view of what their used item is worth. One guy is asking $240 for a 4-bay drive enclosure when the exact same item sells on Amazon for $160. That guy needs to stop taking hallucinogenics.

UGH. currently sitting here waiting for some rando from #Kijiji (its like #Gumtree or #Craigslist) to pick up a #free #thing I have. I said 5:30. They said, cool, 5:30 ill be there. Its now 6:30. I said you have until 7 otherwise Im giving it to rando #2 who wanted it (assuming they don't waste my f'n time).

If I say <time> and I can't make <time>, I msg to say I'm gonna be late or reschedule. Don't waste my time, I won't waste yours.

The recommendation logic of #kijiji is really a joke. I posted a monitor sell, and kijiji is pushing monitor ads to me now.

Well, maybe this is a good sign that the website is using some old-school recommendation system?

I find people who start an offer that's 50% or less than my asking to be not worth my time. I do like to fuck with them in a subtle way, however. I don't just randomly post a price. I research an item's value, what its sold for, what others are asking, and then put mine up at much lower price. Anyone asking for 50% or less clearly has made to effort to figure out if I'm the best price. That usually translates into they probably won't complete the deal after you give them a better price.

I just had a lightning quick, friendly, efficient interaction on #kijiji 🤯

the FIRST PERSON who messaged me about the item:
- responded quickly and friendly to my messages
- came by AT THE APPOINTED TIME
- had followed the instructions in the post to the t
- had the EXACT AMOUNT OF CASH READY

... and we parted after three minutes, happy, the transaction completed.

WHAT IS HAPPENING,,,

#Kijiji is doing a new fun annoying stupid thing!
Some kind of rate limiting... or just dislike for non-Chromium browsers.

You open a tab to access kijiji.ca and are met with either a 500 Internal Error, 403 Access Denied, or the page never loads.
If you then open Kijiji in a Firefox Container OR in a Private Browsing session... it loads completely fine.

However,
it may also be that when you open that page and it appears to load fine, you cannot login. Kijiji will say that the login page "does not exist".

But if you then go to another container or browser session (and this is all from the same IP), wait maybe 5-10s after the page fully loads, THEN you can access the login page!

Alternatively, it seems accessible after going to any ad on the site, then going to the login page.

WTF?

The recommendation system of #kijiji is a joke. I just sold a dryer on it, and my page is filled with dryer ads now.
