I'm reading The KLF: Chaos, Magic and the Band Who Burned a Million Pounds, by John Higgs. I came out of the subway after reading the chapter on the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu album, and sitting in a park were three guys wearing t-shirts that said JAM.

and right now...right now...right now it's time to...kick out the jams, motherfuckers!

Wayne Kramer, guitarist and vocalist for the MC5 died yesterday of pancreatic cancer. I had seen something about this yesterday, but had somehow forgotten all about it until this morning and found the news all over my social media feeds. so writing about Kick Out The Jams became a given, a choice that made itself.

the MC5 are one of those bands with whom plenty of people are unfamiliar, yet it would be impossible to write them out of a detailed history of rock, in general, and punk rock, more specifically. they released three albums on Atlantic between 1969 and 1971.

Kick Out The Jams is considered a proto punk classic. if the path to punk rock begins with the Velvets in NYC it certainly continues through Detroit in the late-sixties and early-seventies with the MC5 and the Stooges taking up the mantle. unlike the Velvets and the Stooges there was a strong blues base to the MC5’s sound.

writing about the band over 25 years ago, Wayne Kramer described the development of their sound: “High Energy is how we described it at the time - no holds barred, pedal to the metal. combining the R&B we heard on WJLB and WCHB, the blues of Howlin' Wolf and John Lee, the new sounds coming in from the Rolling Stones and The Who and the Yardbirds, and the powerful force of the avant-garde "free-jazz movement," we toiled away in small clubs all over the Midwest. night after night, we worked at perfecting our sound and our stage show. the music was in our blood, and it dripped everywhere. Kramer also described their political and musical revolutionary spirit: “that corner in Detroit was, for me at least, the center of the known universe. late nights were spent tripping on acid, smoking the best Mexican herb to be found, listening to Sun Ra, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler, and plotting the future. our political idols were the Black Panther Party and crazed poets like Allen Ginsberg, Charles Olson, and Ed Sanders. these guys were talking in terms we could relate to: "it's time to move, brothers." man, did we plot. pot plotting? plot potting? anyhow, we sure did have the whole thing figured out. we were convinced, committed. we sure were. I was. "Pure and Accurate," we called ourselves - all with a wink and a laugh and great camaraderie.”

by the fall of 1968, the MC5 had become something of a house band at Detroit’s Grande Ballroom. Kick Out The Jams was recorded live over Halloween and the night before. this was the sound captured on their essential debut album.

"Kick Out the Jams" by MC5 released in February 1969. When this came out I was in high school and worked in a music store. The energy exhibited in these performances ignited something deep in my bones. The guys I ran around with hated this record. I've never understood that.

Wayne Kramer departed these earthly confines yesterday. Go man go.
