  1. ‘This is an important perspective - our current international order is about a lot more than trade, tariffs and investment. It is about peace, security, development, climate change, shared standards, and respect for law, including human rights and international humanitarian law. We diminish ourselves and what’s at stake dramatically by limiting the conversation to “rules based order”, as if conventions on genocide and torture, for example, are mere “rules”. Much of the current neo-liberal and more conservative commentary misses this point entirely.’

  6. NATO will stand with or without the US. Canada will and must lead. We have punched above our weight in every war started by others, and now is no different. We help keep the peace, and we do it well, without bloviating, bragging, or playing toy soldiers. We don’t want war, just as we don’t want winter, but when winter or war comes to us or our allies, we do what must be done. Quietly, bravely, effectively, not looking for bragging rights. Just looking for peace, order, and good government, so we and our allies can get on with the timeless human pursuit of community, friendship, and thriving.

    Charlie Angus wrote today:

“In 1939, the odds against the democratic world were massive.

Canada was a poor nation with a small population. But from the get-go, Canadians stepped up and did our part. And in the darkest days of the Second World War, Winston Churchill praised Canada as the linchpin of the democratic resistance.

80 plus years later, democracy is again facing serious threat, and Canada is being tested. A year ago, there were many who thought we would bend or buckle, but we have stood our ground.

Canadians are playing a key role with democratic allies. We are fighting for a just peace in Ukraine. And we are standing up to the fascist threat posed by gangsters who reject democracy and use violence to impose their will.

2026 will be hard and chaotic, but Canadians know what is at stake. We can be counted on once again.”

  7. The interior of the William Morris Cafe in London. The walls are individually hand-painted tiles depicting the months of the year and seasons. Anyone can sit and have a coffee in the space, gazing at the beautiful work.

Consider that the tiles would be hand-painted in exquisite detail, and then consigned to a fire. There would be some professional certainty, but no guarantee, that the tiles would not warp, break, fall, or be scorched in the (at the time) natural fuel kiln. Even before that, a tired, hungry apprentice could drop the tiles or smudge the design on the way to the kiln. The building could have shifted, and the tiles cracked. World wars could have reduced the building to rubble.

But they created this anyway. Over 100 years ago. Because they believed everyone deserved beautiful public spaces. Libraries, museums, parks, gardens, places of peace and refuge.

You don’t know what your actions today could mean in the future. Do the thing you think must be done to make the world kinder and fairer for all. Preserve what makes life worth living. Start with human rights.

  10. Fascists just can’t understand how the majority of people in a country will act on principle, even if it means some discomfort for them. Canadians will bend but we won’t break. And the thing no one is expecting is that we innovate when challenged.

  11. I hope those who need shelter, or food, or safety, or kindness find it tonight, and tomorrow, and the next day, everywhere.

The only way out of this mess is if we all want that for each other, no matter where we are from, what language we speak, or why we are in the circumstance we are in.

Happy Canada Day on Tuesday to everyone who wants democracy, freedom to protest, public broadcasting, free medical care for all, and the separation of church and state.

We’re not perfect in Canada. Far from it. But generally, we know it and we talk about it. And so far, we keep working on it, together, over time.

  12. @SecurityWriter the division is historical - prairies have always opposed central Canada, Quebec is driven as much by business concerns as culture, and Atlantic Can will vote sensibly in a crisis.

Trump pushed us to think nationally and internationally as much as regionally, and that’s a good thing.

    Now the real fight begins.

  13. @Snowshadow exactly. He is getting ready for war, not same-old. I am happy he is keeping the cabinet lean and responsive. Too many cooks would be dangerous right now. When we don’t have the largest military force in the world, run by a fascist who has destroyed his own government and economy, on our undefended border, then we can think about the future. Right now we are adapting daily.

Google maps listing Canadian parks as “State” parks.

    Stop using Google Maps.

In fact, stop using Google if you can.

We used to be friends. Trump is hurting us. But the lack of a groundswell of support from ordinary Americans makes it so much worse. We just can’t trust anything the US says or does as a country. We’re done.

Trump is playing the markets by turning tariffs on and off, causing chaos for everyone. And Americans are letting him walk all over your former allies.

    I won’t buy American again.
