An interesting find in the YIVO archive today, a photo of a Jewish youth orchestra in Chotin, Bessarabia Gubernia, Russian Empire (today Khotyn, Ukraine) from 1910. It appeared 3 times in the box and was one of the only large format historical photos there, perhaps a prized relic of life back home. This was from a collection made up of several interconnected Chotiner mutual aid and relief organizations.

Khotyn Fortress' beginning goes back to the Khotyn Fort, which was built in the 10th century as one of the border fortifications of southwestern Kyiv Rus', after he added the land of present-day Bukovina to his control. The fort,which eventually was rebuilt a fortress,was located on important commerce routes,which connected Scandinavia and Kyiv with Genoese and Greek colonies on the Black Sea,on the famous trade route from the Varangians to Greeks
