  1. A story about my hometown.

I was born and raised in a city called Daejeon in Korea. There's a district called Yuseong, which is famous for its hot springs dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. The photo above shows what Yuseong Hot Springs looked like many years ago.

Yuseong is quite large, and it wasn't originally part of Daejeon. In fact, Yuseong was once larger than Daejeon, before Daejeon began to grow around its railway station. As Daejeon expanded, Yuseong was eventually absorbed into the city in 1914.

But that didn't change the popularity of Yuseong's hot springs. People from Daejeon often took buses all the way to Yuseong just to visit them, and getting there was quite a journey back then. The hot spring district may have been smaller than it is today, but it was already well known, partly because of a story that a king of the Joseon Dynasty was cured of a skin disease after bathing in its waters.

Sadly, the hot spring district has been declining in recent years, and many businesses struggled to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, Yuseong Hot Springs remain an important part of the history of my hometown.

  2. Quote of the day, 11 July: Léonie Martin

On Sunday, 11 July 1937, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli presided at the solemn blessing of the new Basilica of Saint Thérèse at Lisieux, and Pope Pius XI addressed the faithful by radio broadcast from Rome. Two days later, Léonie Martin wrote to her Carmelite sisters about the extraordinary celebrations she had followed by radio from her Visitation monastery in Caen.

    V + J!
From our monastery in Caen, 13 July, 1937

    My very dear little sisters,

How eager I am to know how those heavenly days unfolded in our blessed Carmel. Tell me everything, I beg you, down to the smallest details, because as for what happened within the enclosure, I know that the Annals will say nothing about it.

Here, thanks to your customary generosity, the radio transported us not only to the Basilica but to Rome. What ineffable joy it was to hear our holy and beloved Pontiff, Pius XI! We were all on our knees, deeply moved, especially your poor little sister, who was watering the floor with her tears.

What, then, will the heaven that awaits us be like, since even now, from this place of exile, we taste such joys that have the savor of the divine, of the eternal face-to-face? And the magnificent address of the holy Legate, and the Litany of the Saints. How beautiful it all was!!!!

All that day I was the guest of honor with our very good Mother, even in the refectory. Two of our dear extern sisters are going to bring you my little letter of thanks, so poorly expressed, alas. One can only stammer when speaking of such great things. We would have to borrow the language of the angels and saints….

How is our dear godmother after so much emotion? Our blessed and silent enclosures help us, through ineffable remembrance, to savor those days that belonged more to heaven than to earth.

Yes, truly, we can say that our gentle King, in his Sacrament of Love, was praised, loved, exalted, and glorified as never before. The one desire of our hearts as brides has been fulfilled. Let us give thanks and rejoice with gladness.

I love you, little sisters, ever more dearly,

    Sr. Françoise-Thérèse
    D.S.B. [Blessed be God]

[p.s.] How interesting the little illustrated booklet is. Thank you!

    Servant of God Léonie Martin

    Family Correspondence

Note: On 11 July 1937, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII, presided as the legate of Pope Pius XI at the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. A Eucharistic Congress provided the setting for the solemn blessing of the new basilica, and Cardinal Pacelli addressed the immense gathering of pilgrims. Pope Pius XI also spoke by radio from Castel Gandolfo, sending his blessing to the crowds assembled at Lisieux.

The uncertain weather caused considerable anxiety in Lisieux and also affected radio reception. Two days later, Céline told Léonie that the sisters had wondered during their midday recreation whether the Visitation community in Caen had been able to hear the broadcast, since radio sets did not always work reliably. The New York Times likewise reported that atmospheric conditions interfered with reception of the Pope’s address in the United States. Léonie’s letter brought the welcome news that the broadcast had indeed carried her community not only to the basilica in Lisieux but even to Rome.

When Léonie says that she was “the guest of honor” throughout the day, she means that at prayer in the monastic choir, in the refectory, and at recreation, she occupied an honored place beside the Mother Superior instead of her customary seat among the nuns, as she would have done on the day of her profession.

  3. An interesting find in the YIVO archive today, a photo of a Jewish youth orchestra in Chotin, Bessarabia Gubernia, Russian Empire (today Khotyn, Ukraine) from 1910. It appeared 3 times in the box and was one of the only large format historical photos there, perhaps a prized relic of life back home. This was from a collection made up of several interconnected Chotiner mutual aid and relief organizations.

  4. I’ve always loved the special art of colorization of old historical photos. I especially love this one. This is the Tuskegee Airmen…they were the first African American pilots and pioneers who blazed a trail through the war-torn skies over Europe. They are part of our history that cannot be rewritten, forgotten or erased by anyone…

Taken during the 1900 event in Austin Texas, by photojournalist Grace Murray Stephenson.

The celebrations included free food, though many brought picnic baskets ot their own, and there was music and dancing that lasted past midnight.
