In an email to beta testers, the company said the site’s goal is to “track the most influential voices in a space” and to surface the news that’s actually worth “paying attention to.” AI is the area it’s testing this idea with, but if successful, Digg will expand to include other topics.

Digg cierra su beta tras solo dos meses invadido por bots y agentes de IA
Lo que debía ser el renacimiento de una leyenda ha terminado en una cruda lección sobre el estado actual de la web. Este 14 de marzo de 2026, apenas dos meses después de su esperado relanzamiento, Digg ha anunciado el cierre de su beta abierta y un recorte masivo de su plantilla. El motivo no es financiero, sino existencial: la plataforma fue literalmente «devorada» por ejércitos de bots y agentes de IA tan sofisticados que hicieron imposible distinguir el contenido humano de la basura automatizada (Fuente Digg).
Justin Mezzell, CEO de Digg, ha sido tajante en su comunicado de despedida: «Sabíamos que los bots eran parte del paisaje, pero no apreciamos la escala, sofisticación o velocidad a la que nos encontrarían».
La invasión: Cuando los votos no significan nada
El modelo original de Digg se basaba en la confianza: los usuarios votaban (dugg) las noticias más interesantes para llevarlas a portada. Sin embargo, en el internet de 2026, ese sistema se volvió su mayor debilidad:
- Spammers de SEO: Al detectar que el dominio de Digg conservaba una alta autoridad en Google, miles de bots inundaron el sitio con enlaces basura para posicionar webs de terceros en cuestión de horas.
- Agentes de IA Manipuladores: A diferencia de los bots antiguos, los nuevos agentes de IA son capaces de mantener discusiones coherentes y votar estratégicamente para simular tendencias orgánicas, burlando los sistemas de detección tradicionales.
- Pérdida de la Base: «Cuando no puedes confiar en que los votos y comentarios sean reales, pierdes los cimientos sobre los que se construye una comunidad», admitió Mezzell.
Kevin Rose y Alexis Ohanian: Un «Dream Team» que no bastó
El proyecto había generado una expectación inmensa al reunir a Kevin Rose (fundador original de Digg) y Alexis Ohanian (cofundador de Reddit), quienes recompraron la marca en 2025 para ofrecer una alternativa transparente a las redes sociales actuales. Pese a contar con el apoyo de firmas como Seven Seven Six y True Ventures, el equipo se enfrentó a una realidad que ni siquiera los gigantes como Meta o X han logrado resolver del todo: en 2026, más del 50% del tráfico web ya no es humano.
¿Es el fin definitivo de Digg?
Aunque la beta abierta ha sido clausurada y la aplicación retirada de las tiendas, la empresa asegura que Digg no ha muerto. Kevin Rose regresará a tiempo completo en abril para liderar un equipo reducido que intentará «reimaginar» el producto desde cero.
«Posicionar a Digg simplemente como una alternativa a los incumbentes (como Reddit) no fue lo suficientemente imaginativo. Lo que viene después necesita ser genuinamente diferente», señaló la directiva.
Lecciones para el ecosistema tech
El fracaso de Digg sirve como advertencia para otros lanzamientos de 2026:
- Privacidad vs. Autenticidad: Mientras Meta retira el cifrado de Instagram para mejorar la moderación, Digg demuestra que sin una verificación de identidad estricta, las plataformas abiertas son vulnerables.
- La soberanía del dato: Al igual que el «Experimento Oculto» de Pokémon GO, donde los datos de los usuarios entrenan a robots, el tráfico de Digg estaba siendo utilizado por agentes de IA para «entrenarse» y propagar desinformación.
- Competencia feroz: Convencer a los usuarios de abandonar sus comunidades establecidas es casi imposible cuando la alternativa está inundada de «machine garbo» (basura generada por máquinas).

I got into Suse at some point, too! I loved distro-hopping. #Knoppix was a big one, which seemed so innovative to me. I think that was around the time I would wait (in vain, ultimately) for more episodes of #TheBroken with #KevinRose!I stuck with #Ubuntu for many years, from 4.10 (which was extremely impressive and polished) until 12.04 LTS. I switched to #Windows for a few years, then finally fell in love with #Fedora.
