03-03-2024 - #KentWA - Refugees Seeking #Asylum
On Sunday a press conference was held at the Quality Inn in Kent Washington. #Refugees are seeking immediate housing assistance. Refugees will be forced to leave the hotel on Tuesday the 5th. The owner of the hotel, Eli Min, has little choice as the situation has become increasingly dire. Somewhere between 200-240 refugees have been temporarily sheltering at the hotel, including around 70 children, with around 62 rooms being occupied.
During the press conference while being translated to English, refugees reflected that many of them are from #Venezuela seeking the ability to work in the United States. Due to delays in processing and other unmet basic needs, they are unable to seek work, and face near daily emergencies.
Many refugees at the press conference appeared hopeful that a larger news network such as Komo News @KOMO4 would arrive to help deliver what might be the group's last message while still being together, but it seemed no major news outlet arrived.
While children could off/on be seen playing in hallways, parents were trying to keep their hopes high.
After the press conference ended, we sat down and asked a few questions off camera.
Some of the questions we asked were based on what we'd previously witnessed at the Governor Hotel/Red Lion in #OlympiaWA in early 2021. If you're unfamiliar with that story, please look it up.
We asked what refugees might be expecting if law enforcement gets involved in their departure from the Hotel. These weren't comfortable questions to ask. It wasn't clear how much thought went into this possibility, but we weren't expecting direct answers either. In a couple different ways, we received indications the refugees operate as a group together with its own internal leadership.
We asked if it's possible certain refugees could be forced to leave while others stayed due to being able to pay. We received a similar response, with refugees operating as a group together.
One could only imagine the difficulty of contemplating these things.
We asked if the governor or governors office was aware of the Tuesday deadline. They responded saying they were at the Capitol on 02/07 and it was at that point we remembered, so were we. Filling in an additional detail we weren't aware of, on that day they spoke with representative David Hackney. Based on our conversation it doesn't sound like David Hackney took any action. Later while writing this article, we found an April 14, 2023 article on housedemocrats.wa.gov under a page for David Hackney, that refers to "Assisting Immigrants and Refugees" with affordable "residential spaces" for "refugee communities" Hmm, about that.
Additionally although unrelated, it appears David Hackney also recently sponsored a bill that would "increase penalties for protests on Washington freeways" HB2358 - starting at a gross misdemeanor, but also (of course) increase the offense to a felony if the person is an organizer. We'll save you from our opinion on this, for now.
With costs in mind when asking about the numbers earlier, we believe this puts things at about $111-130k per month, if the current refugees were to move to another Hotel.
That may sound like a lot, but put ~$4k per day in the context of our military spending, let us know where that lands.
