Over 4 tense days, rising unrest, curfews, and the deployment of the Ohio National Guard led to clashes between students and authorities. 05/04/2024 04:12 PM EDT"Progressive lawmakers this week compared recent police crackdowns on student anti-war demonstrations to the deadly response to anti-Vietnam War campus protests over 50 years ago, warning the Biden administration not to repeat history.
"In a social media post Saturday, Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) marked the 54th anniversary of the Kent State shootings, when the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four students and injured nine others at an anti-Vietnam War protest. In her post, she compared the historic tragedy to the recent wave of police crackdowns on campuses across the country.
"'On the 54th anniversary of the #KentStateMassacre, students across our country are being brutalized for standing up to #EndlessWar,' Bush wrote. “Our country must learn to actually uphold the rights of #FreeSpeech & assembly upon which it was founded.”
"In a similar post, Rep. #IlhanOmar (D-Minn.) wrote: “54 years ago, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on unarmed students at Kent State. Students have a right to speak out, organize, and protest systemic wrongs. We can’t silence those expressing dissent, no matter how uncomfortable their protests may be to those in power.'"

Today, I remember Allison, Bill, Jeff, and Sandy. On this day in 1970, my Alma Mater was senselessly attacked.
Students were gathered to protest a war, when the authorities descended on them. Sound familiar recently?
But this time, after a suspicious huddle By the National Guard troops, live bullets were fired on the students, who were more than a football field’s length away from the troops. Half of those killed were part of the protest; the other half were not - Bill was even in the ROTC program on campus. This attack would become known as the Kent State Massacre. 9 students were wounded, 1 of those paralyzed for life, and as the song says, “Four Dead in Ohio.”
Never forget the lengths government goes to in order to keep us in line, whether it means monitoring our every communication, or firing senselessly into a crowd of unarmed students.
I hope you are resting easily, Jeff, Allison, Bill, and Sandy, and may the gods have blessed your sacrifice in your next lives.
