  1. Ebisu-jinja was established by Myōan Eisai (明菴栄西) in 1202 to act as guardian for Kennin-ji (then being built), and to thank the god Ebisu for saving him from a storm when returning from the mainland.

Eisai is credited with bringing the Rinzai school of Zen and the tradition of tea-drinking to Japan.

  2. 2) BOARS🐗

Boars are familiars of Marishiten (摩利支天), goddess of 'victory and abundance'.

Pale-faced and brightly garbed, Marishiten is seen riding seven golden boars. She was particularly popular with warriors, and is worshipped at Kennin-ji's sub-temple Zenkyo-an (禅居庵 aka Marishiten-dō 摩利支天堂).

Ryōsoku-in (両足院), a sub-temple of Kennin-ji (建仁寺), is affectionately known as the 'Temple of the Hangeshō' (半夏生の寺) at this time of year, when the herb "Chinese lizard's tail" begins to bloom in profusion.

  4. Thanks to the many sweet hydrangeas that bloom in its gardens, Reigen-in (霊源院) is commonly known as the 'Amacha Temple' (甘茶の寺).

The Kennin-ji sub-temple was founded between 1394-1428 by Ichian Ichirin (一庵一麟). First named 'Reisen-in' (霊泉院), a few years later Kennin-ji's abbot, Zaisen Kijō (在先希譲), renamed it Reigen-in.

  5. More Photo Memories I took back home, from Kyoto.

Kennin-ji (Japanese: 建仁寺) is a historic Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, and head temple of its associated branch of Rinzai Buddhism. It is considered to be one of the so-called Kyoto Gozan or "five most important Zen temples of Kyoto".

Kennin-ji was founded in 1202 CE and claims to be the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto.

The monk Eisai, credited with introducing Zen to Japan, served as Kennin-ji's founding abbot and is buried on the temple grounds.
