Well that was an eventful day! Me (48X), my kiddo (21X) and my niece (18F) departed from Nijmegen at 8AM to drive to #Amsterdam for the #Pride Walk from Dam Square to #Vondelpark, the opening event of this year's #WorldPride. We parked the car at Zeeburg III P+R, took the tram 26 to the central station, and then walked from there to Dam Square.
At 11:00, the event started, with several fine speeches. By 11:45, standing in the hot sun, I started feeling unwell... I told my kiddo and niece that I'd go find a place to sit down for a moment. I was feeling weak, dizzy, tingling sensations in my arms... Someone called an event medic to me and they decided to get an ambulance on the scene just in case. Meanwhile, my condition was thankfully improving again. When the ambulance arrived, they decided to give me a check-up anyway. They hooked me up to the heart monitor and everything looked fine. In the end, it was probably a combination of the heat, the crowd, and the blood pressure meds that I had started on a few weeks ago resulting in a temporary drop in blood pressure with the resulting symptoms.
With that out of the way, we were even able to catch up to the Pride Walk and walk with them all the way into and through Vondelpark, until we got to the part of Vondelpark dubbed "Pride Park". When we got there, we saw several people carrying Palestinian flags being stopped by police. Since I wasn't with that specific anti-genocide bloc - I was just there with my queer family members - I tried to pass around that blockade, but the police blocked me from entering too. You see, on my collapsable flag pole, I didn't only have a #NonBinary pride flag, but also a #Palestine flag. So like the other people, now at least two dozen, who had Palestinian flags or were wearing a #keffiyeh, the police denied me entrance, and my child and niece as well.
This mass of people being blocked from entering caused others to be only able to pass through in single file, or sometimes not at all. Under chants of "Free Palestine", "Tout le monde déteste la police", "Let them through", "Amsterdam is saying no to genocide" and others, the police caused a lot of tension. At several occasions, people got shoved out of the way - not just by police, but also by people from behind, who wanted to get to the opening ceremony hosted by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. My niece, who is recovering from a broken foot and is still somewhat unstable on her feet and using a cane for balance and support, was also shoved at least four times, once ending up fully on the ground.
Now it shoud also be known that my niece is no stranger to such altercations with the police because she's a member of XR and has joined several XR protests, but being in such a situation unprepared and while still recovering from an injury is something else... My kiddo is also familiar with French university protests, and I've endured my fair share of violent police action during antifascist protests, so none of us were noobs at this, but it was still a very stressful situation - at least I was not at risk of developing another low blood pressure incident!
Anyway, my clearly disabled niece was visibly shaken so I started pleading with the police to let us through so I could take care of her since she was in my charge. They refused, even though they saw clearly that my niece was in distress. However, they said, if I put the Palestinian flag away, we would be let through. I folded up my flags, collapsed the pole and put it all in my backpack... They still refused to let us through. The flag in the bag was now a no-go too. I would have to leave it here... So, I detached the Palestinian flag and handed it to a person wearing a keffiyeh behind me - I'd lose it, but it would at least go to someone who would put it to good use. Again, still, the police would not let us through, although I had acquiesced to all of their unreasonable demands.
Meanwhile, the police forcefully removed an elderly lady, who walked using two canes, who was carrying a Palestinian flag... All through that time there were several pushing and shoving incidents, both police shoving people with pro-Palestine items back, and visitors shoving them out of the way from the back so they could get through... People, where is your fucking #solidarity? Your queer siblings are being denied entrance because of the flag they carry or the clothes they wear... Do you not see how this should be your fight as well? None are free until we are all free!
We decided to call it and went a small distance back instead. After having recombobulated ourselves in the shade of the trees some 50 yards from the blockade, we gave it another attempt. The blockade was still ongoing. The police officers recognized us and still denied us entrance. But finally, after they had searched our bags to make sure I had no other Palestinian flags or keffiyehs in there, we were let through.
We ended up having a pretty good time in the Pride Park. We then also saw the rules of the Pride Park, which included: "No flags of any countries or organizations allowed." With evidence abound that this rule was being very selectively applied because there were many flags of various queer organizations present. And it's the World Pride - how can you ban national flags at such an event? Even then, by those posted rules, the Palestinian flag should be allowed, because the Netherlands doesn't recognise Palestine as a country, so by Dutch law, it's not a national flag. And a keffiyeh is also not a flag...
After making a round by all the stands in the park, we grabbed some very nice vegan sushi and then decided to go home. When we arrived at central station, it turned out that tram 26 had just run into an incident so there would be no trams going to P+R Zeeburg for, well, nobody knew how long... A bus service was being set up at that moment, but wasn't in place yet. Hundreds of people were already waiting so it would probably take at least an hour for us to even get going towards our car... We decided to take a cab instead. The cab driver was a really cool guy - he did charge us €60 for the trip though, geez, but at least we were back at our car and could commence our drive home.
So all in all a very eventful day in Amsterdam!

"The right to peaceful protest is essential to our democracies, allowing people to come together with a unified voice to support or oppose key issues. It serves as a powerful mechanism for individuals to hold their governments to account and is often the last resort when prior messages go unheard. However, politicians often perceive this right as a threat, especially when force of numbers demonstrates support for an issue."In our recently published Rule of Law report, Liberties’ members reported an increase in restrictions on the right to peaceful protest in all countries - from bans on individual protests to the disproportionate use of force by the police and legislative changes. A widespread trend emerged of restricted #ProPalestine protests and #EnvironmentalDefenders receiving particularly harsh penalties.
Bans on Protests
"Restrictions on various protest movements justified on public safety grounds were documented in many member states. In #Germany, the Berlin Assembly Authorities implemented a temporary blanket ban targeting pro-Palestine demonstrations. Initially, the ban targeted celebrations of the mass murder and pro-Hamas demonstrations but later extended to all pro-Palestinian protests. Similarly, in #Latvia, an unregistered #FreePalestine movement protest was banned after an assessment by the state security service that the event would, among other risks, harm the country’s international interests.
"The Estonian police banned a protest in support of #Palestinians, which was later declared unlawful by the administrative court. In #Hungary, Prime Minister #ViktorOrbán publicly prejudiced support for Palestinians by linking it with terrorism, equating solidarity with civilians victims to threats to the public order. As the fifteen attempts to organise protests were successively banned, the government and the Prime Minister re-asserted their power by deciding what can be demonstrated for, namely, topics in line with their political interests. Following the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the Hungarian government has repeatedly declared and extended the state of danger, allowing for the adoption of emergency decrees restricting, among other rights, the freedom to assemble. Both the Hungarian Supreme Court and Constitutional Court upheld the protest bans on the basis of public safety and security, legalising the practice of police-authorised restrictions in times of conflict.
"Further restrictions, including bans on #slogans and #signs during #demonstrations, sought to criminalise protesters. Several individuals were arrested or fined for displaying signs or slogans related to Palestine. In #Belgium, activists faced administrative sanctions for carrying a #PalestinianFlag or the #keffiyeh. Similarly, in the #Netherlands, attendees of an #ExtinctionRebellion demonstration were prohibited from mentioning the conflict in the Middle East. The enforcement of restrictions went as far as arrests, as Croatian activists were charged with misdemeanor after projecting a message in support of Palestine on a building across from the Israeli Embassy in Zagreb.
"In Hungary, a demonstrator faced criminal charges after wearing a gas mask and removing it after being asked by the police. In a worrying trend of criminalising protest activities, several activists were arrested and charged with sedition before an Extinction Rebellion demonstration in the Netherlands.
Disproportionate use of force by the police
"The criminalisation of environmental and pro-Palestine protesters was worsened by the violent repression of the police through excessive use of force. This was particularly notable in Sweden, where student encampments in support of Palestinians were forcibly displaced and participants were charged with criminal offenses. #PainGrips, water guns and #WaterCannons were used against environmental activists, pro-Palestinian and anti-immigration demonstrators in Germany, the #Netherlands and #Ireland.
"Environmental activists faced similar fates, The NGO ‘#FranceNatureEnvironnement’ reported concerns to the UN Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders following the violent repression of protesters during a demonstration against the A69 highway. In #Sweden, a woman was dismissed from her job at the Swedish Energy Agency for participating in an environmental demonstration and a growing number of #EcoActivists were fined for participating in peaceful protests."
