I use Keet a lot lately.
This might sound like an ad, but it’s not. Just sharing something I actually use.
No servers. No data harvesting. Messages go directly between people.
I know most won’t bother trying it. That’s fine.
If you’re curious, watch this: -

@serapath
> to stabilize p2p primitives before they get open sourcedThis one would be more convincing ... If it wasn't for the fact that Keet is based on Pear, which is already published;
https://github.com/holepunchto/pear
Pear is in turn based on HyperCore/ DAT, which is too;
https://github.com/holepunchto/hypercore
Hypercore is part of DAT which is a documented open protocol;
https://dat.foundation/about/foundation/
So the "primitives" are already out there.
-
@serapath @strypey well #Holochain has had far-right personalities leading its communities, and #Keet actively includes them, so there's that. Holochain has repeatedly championed White Nationalist hate actors and marketed itself to the far-right through its founding members and ecosystem growth manager.
IMO (as someone who collaborated with them for a long time and knows the architecture deeply) the DHT scenario and Holochain's forkable network architecture makes this a much more dangerous combination. No trust or consent is needed to replicate peer data to new group members, and data and code can be forked off to new groups any time. At least in Keet replication is up to the individual and not the volk.

To those newly boosting this- I can no longer in good conscience recommend #Keet as an ethical messaging alternative. In some ways that is fine, because it's serverless and so there's no infrastructure that can be compromised.
Just be aware that it is fascist-built and owned tech, set your boundaries and sanctions appropriately, and give nothing back to their toxic and structurally violent community.

Noteworthy that I also see people in the Pears community chat asking whether #Holepunch are part of the 'Privacy Accelerationists' group https://privacc.org and so seems pretty clear to me that #Keet's marketing is also attracting Landian #fascist #accelerationist hate actors.
I am aware that Holepunch's ~$10M in funding places them in an exponentially more powerful position than the impoverished progressive @dat_ecosystem that they've built atop of and co-opted. I also want to say that DAT's private responses to me have been exemplary in how to generatively respond to cultural issues. I hope to see people in the broader #DatEcosystem and @apereo continuing to hold that torch.
This is #OpenSource's damaging #BigTent philosophy at work yet again.
-
As I've already indicated, if no official response is given I will be creating strong sanctions around use of @holepunch_to software and contributing to their communities. I will no longer recommend #Keet or #Pears openly or to groups I work with, and instead take on the responsibility of warning marginalised people of their toxic culture and against engaging with them.
You have lost yourselves a fan, and created a vocal detractor.
-
The same reductive individualistic logic I have seen peddled across more or less every #DWeb community I have ever engaged with of course gets some airtime here:
"In short #Keet, Pear and #P2P is about #decentralization and that means giving power to individuals and taking it from large entities like governments and companies ie meta etc"
Sure bros, you've made your politics clear. It's all "I will not be ruled" here, "I will not rule" or the matter of what happens with that power once it has been siezed hasn't even entered awareness.
https://c4ss.org/content/56480
In suggesting that we "all work together on avoiding tyranny in all its forms", David seems completely unaware of his direct contributions to the tyranny of Pears' official channels.
-
Reporting back on this confronting interaction with the #Holepunch / #Keet community in their official #Pears channel last December 13th/14th (depending on your timezone).

TLDR; yes, it's another violent #DistributedWeb #DWeb community incubating hate projects and including #fascist actors.
-
#Keet & #Holepunch @holepunch_to teams- following up from yesterday:
Pragmatically, I'll still use your software (though it makes trusting proprietary modules feel even more sketchy tbh). Yours is probably the one #TechnoFascist project I'm aware of that actually has good code & UX. And it's self sovereign, so.
If your response goes further into a downward spiral of innocense & virtue instead of some amends, accountability and recovery, I'll just do what we're doing for #Holochain. Authoring politically assertive #governance processes around my collective's & partnership's use of their software, explicitly calling out the harm and creating guardrails to prevent any upstream contributions (intellectual, social or otherwise). And then we'll open source those docs, surface them everywhere, and make them easily adoptable & forkable.
-
[me]: I have to say, on a political note, I find the #Keet marketing of "The chat app for #FreeSpeech" to be quite triggering. That's far-right messaging, folks; and you're attracting the wrong crowd with it. 'Free Speech' tends toward '#HateSpeech' pretty much every time.
What about "The chat app for oppressed minorities" or "The chat app for marginalised communities"?(~2h 30m later)

woah 😯 the #Keet community's response to cultural commentary is INTENSE.
I'm out. Fix your shit & release an official statement, #BigTent #OpenSource #fascists.
See Keet official "#Pear Community" group for the crazy. -
@powersource yeah, I'm not talking about switching 🙂 I'm talking about backup resilient comms infrastructure. (And knowing you, maybe you're talking about #Scuttlebutt when you're talking about "switching", so 100% good point there with equivalence to #Keet- both are DHT-based handshake protocols that end in gossip peering; and one is OSS but the other is not.)
-
@racchio I don't know much about #Nostr, other than that it's a fascist-run project with a disastrous cultural history. But yes, #Keet is for IM and runs fully decentralised.
(I'm going to use that word rather than "distributed" as the architecture *does* actually facilitate the distribution of power as well as of compute & storage. It's also built by a pretty cool community of anarchists & anarcho-syndicalists, at least the ones I've met.)
-
To everybody currently experiencing the #Signal messenger downtime and precariousness of digital infrastructure that relies on servers, know that #Keet exists! It can preserve network connectivity and message deliverability in very degraded and hostile network conditions due to the absence of servers in its #p2p architecture.
The world needs resilient communications for what is to come. Don't let your whole network depend on one company.
-
@drahardja @anji to your point about OSS #UX, #Keet's is actually quite good IMO (though it is not yet open-sourced); and the onboarding is much smoother than it used to be (although initial sync of the app data still takes a little while).
Meets the #Discord crowd's needs of video & audio chat in large groups, which AFAIK #Matrix does not.

#California’s #NPR and #PBS stations will cut staff and programs after funding slashed
By Maya C. Miller and Cayla Mihalovich
July 29, 2025 10:05 AM PT"Small NPR and PBS stations in California are teetering after Congress pulled funding from #PublicBroadcasting. Even big stations are bracing for cuts.
"Dozens of California public broadcasting stations will lose millions of dollars after Republicans in Congress voted to strip them of federal funding, cutting off a vital lifeline in rural communities and limiting access to local news programming in an era of hyperpartisan national media.
"While California broadcasters are assuring audiences that they plan to keep their signals running, they also warn that cost-saving changes are inevitable.
"Radio and television stations of all sizes across the Golden State say that to survive, they’ll likely be forced to lay off staff and cut programming unless they’re able to make up the losses through fundraising. Their leaders warn that the cuts will disproportionately harm locally produced programs, the most expensive to create but among their most popular content, that inform millions of listeners and viewers.
"Republicans have long wanted to cut funding for public broadcasting, arguing such services should be funded by private donors, not taxpayers. Their efforts prevailed when Congress last week finalized President Trump’s request to rescind $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides grants to National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting Service, their affiliates and other independent public media creators. All nine of California’s #Republican members of #Congress voted in favor of the funding cuts.
"Now, roughly 35 stations from #SanDiego to #Hoopa in #HumboldtCounty have lost critical funding.
"While many public broadcasters remain hopeful that they’ll find ways to endure, all agree the rescission undermines the #egalitarian mission of public media — to create a nationwide network that provides access to quality information, stories and music for local #communities.
" 'That has been our superpower,' said Joe Moore, president and general manager of #KVPR #ValleyPublicRadio in #Fresno. His station lost about 7% of its budget, or $175,000, from the #CPB.
" 'The New York Times doesn’t have the type of investment in #Alaska or in #NorthDakota — or on #TribalReservations, bringing local news from these communities — that public radio does.'
"Smaller stations whose budgets relied heavily on federal dollars to make ends meet are the most at risk of closure. In Eureka, the community-owned PBS affiliate #KEET-TV stands to lose $847,000 — nearly half of its operating budget — due to the defunding of CPB. To survive, all of its funding will need to come from #CommunitySupport, since the station has no institutional backer such as a local college or school district.
"David Gordon, KEET’s general manager and executive director, says that as much as he hopes the station will stay afloat even at reduced capacity, he won’t make the same bold proclamation that, 'We’re not going anywhere,' like some stations have.
" 'I can’t guarantee that KEET will be here once the dust settles from this defunding move,' Gordon said. He emphasized that he was speaking for himself and not on behalf of his station.
" 'I hope it is, and I think there’s a good chance that it’ll survive in some form. But absolutely will it? I don’t know if I can say that.'
"Nearby, Mendocino-based NPR member station #KZYX was forced to lay off its news director after losing 25% of its operating budget, or $174,000, from the CPB. That means news will include fewer in-depth stories, such as interviews with city council members or county supervisors, said Andre de Channes, KZYX’s general manager and director of operations.
" 'There isn’t the time to source out those kinds of things,' he said. 'So the news gets more like a headline news.'
"The station serves roughly 130,000 listeners, including in Mendocino County and part of Lake County. When De Channes first learned about the CPB cuts, he immediately worried about fire safety, since listeners who live in #OffTheGrid #RuralAreas without access to internet or cell service rely on KZYX for #EmergencyInformation.
"Those potentially lifesaving #EmergencyAlerts became a rallying cry for public media providers and their allies as they begged Congress to preserve funding for their stations, especially those in remote, rural areas that also tend to be Republican. Frank Lanzone, the longtime general manager of the NPR-affiliated KCBX in San Luis Obispo, said his station has sometimes been the only on-air source providing emergency information during #SevereWeather events." 'There’s been several times in very bad storms when we’re the only station on the air in our area because of either power outages or people’s generators ran out of propane,' said Lanzone, who has worked in public radio for more than 50 years.
KCBX, which serves about 45,000 listeners from Santa Barbara to Monterey, will lose $240,000 in funding from CPB, about 13% of its operating budget." 'It’s going to hurt the stations and the people that listen to them who need it the most,' Lanzone said. 'The most vulnerable, the ones out in the middle of nowhere.'
"Local programs are most at risk
Both radio and television station leaders emphasized that local programming — shows that are created and produced in-house rather than purchased from another producer — will be first on the chopping block. To produce locally focused public television programming, stations must invest additional time, money and work on top of the membership dues they pay to be affiliated with PBS, which unlocks a large catalogue of programming that they can air at no additional cost."For PBS viewers in the Inland Empire, that likely means the loss of popular local programs such as '#InlandEdition,' an Emmy-winning weekly half-hour public affairs show, and '#LearnWithMe,' an award-winning #bilingual English-Spanish children’s show, both of which are produced in house by affiliate KVCR.
" 'The local stuff that’s so important to people is probably the stuff that’ll go away,' said Connie Leyva, executive director of KVCR and a former Democratic state senator. The station stands to lose about $550,000 in annual CPB funding, about 6% of its budget.
She emphasized that the station also wanted to preserve its journalism staff — two full-time reporters and one part-time — who have recently focused on federal #ImmigrationRaids taking place across the region." 'If we’re not here, the #InlandEmpire is just hearing about what’s happening in Los Angeles,' Leyva said. 'We want to know what’s happening in our backyard, what’s happening at the schools around us, what’s happening at the Home Depots around us.' "

Hmm. No Keet app in F-Droid. Let's try the website;
"You need to enable JavaScript to run this app."
Ooookay. Turned on. Huh. Not an app at all, just a simple brochureware site that could be pure HTML/CSS uploaded by FTP.
"Keet BETA is here!"
Ok. Click on "Download Keet";
"Get Keet for Android | Keet from Play Store"
Oh. Not an option. What about GNU/Linux? Seems I have to compile each new version myself from a tar.gz of source code.

Does #Holepunch have any plans to add recording capabilities to #Keet?
It strikes me that this epic feat of #p2p engineering that far outperforms any centralized #VideoConferencing would be the workshop facilitator & remote team manager's perfect tool; if only there was an option to retain streams on disk for later broadcast, transcription etc.
It also strikes me that #Hypercore is tailored to do exactly this kind of stream handling.
-
Is anyone using #holepunch #keet P2P messaging? I'm testing it out on Linux and iPad/iPhone -looks good so far but would appreciate thoughts or comments.
