@decryption well, $360 is objectively a lot for a keyboard – especially for those of us who grew up poor & will never really be able to shake all the things that flow from that experience 💁♀️
I’m interested to know which #keeb, & what are the 🦄 features that draw you to it over other keebs 👀 (I’m not looking to dissuade you, ofc., just interested)
for me, I’ve owned multiple #MechKeebs, but I don’t think I’ve paid more than ~$150 for any of them and most were ~$120-$130 (and I agonised over spending the money on my first one for, I suspect, similar reasons)but I have pretty basic requirements for #keebs:
– mech switches (or equivalents, I guess, I haven’t really strayed much from Cherry MXes)
– good switches – I’ve tried Cherry MX browns, blues, reds, & LP reds (on my portable keeb) but tend to prefer blues for both the tactility & the sound (unless I’m in an office where such noises might get me stabbed in the eye with a fork 🤪)
– decent RGB lighting (with shine-through keycap legends), both for the
~~cYb3rpUnk~~aesthetic 🤪 & for allowing me to actually see the keycap legends[1] in suboptimal office lighting 😩– not-shit software for setting / saving lighting profiles (I’m givin’ you side-eye, #CoolerMaster 😮💨) OR
– decent on-keeb capabilities for setting RGB layout & profiles (which is the one area that Cooler Master[2] actually do – er, did 🪦 – pretty well)
I’m too old[3] to re-train my muscle memory to a split ortho layout, so I haven’t / won’t (? 🤔) explored that particular expensive rabbit hole…
weirdly, for whatever reason keebs are one of the few areas that I’ve been able to pretty quickly get to “this’ll do nicely, I don’t need to keep agonising over optimising this on an ongoing basis…” 🎉
1 see [3]2 my daily drivers (home / work / portable) are all Cooler Masters at this point, with a couple of other cheapies floating around for various projects that I may or may not ever get to 🙃
3 not really 😜 but the typing performance hit is a PiTA akin to when I’ve attempted to finally become fully touch-typing capable – I was hunt-&-pecking on a terrible chiclet keyboard for my first computer, which was before I got to do a typing elective in secondary school (I fell in the gap between “teach the girls typing so they can be secretaries” & “teach all the kids typing so they can use a computer effectively” – which TBH I’m not sure we ever actually did in Aus, just somehow assuming that kids would become touch typists by osmosis like we assume that they’ll become “good at computers” or “digital natives” by repeatedly pushing buttons on their pocket rectangles until the slot-machine pays out & then just remembering the sequence of button pushes…[4])
4 …but I digress 🤪

So my new keyboard is kinda crazy

NEVER ATTACK the #FreeSoftware / #OpenSource software community if your customer base is exclusively the #Maker community! They have a huge overlap. You might as well shutter your business instead.
Just imagine irking Jeff Geerling (@geerlingguy) and Louis Rossmann at the same time! #BambuLab

Fedi #keeb and #keycap enjoyers, I'm on the hunt for some good high quality Arabic keycaps. I'm actually leaning towards two sites where you give them your specs and they make the keycaps. But, I'm unsure if these places are actually good. One explicitly advertises double shot keycaps, which for custom ones... Is so neat! But, is the quality good? I don't see people talk about their shipping times or fab times. I don't need these fully custom ones. But, it would be neat to have Colemak DH cherry profile keycaps with Arabic script as a sub. The main thing I'm looking out for is just high quality dual Arabic/English keycaps. Colemak DH and cherry profile would just be chef's kiss. (MT3 would actually be...)

I got the parts for a new split keyboard. This time its the 42-key beekeeb Toucan Wireless.
I chose this mainly because of the slim design, the integrated magsafe rings on the back, and the right side touchpad.
Its the first keyboard with such a tight switch placement, all my others use the standard MX spacing, which is much wider.
So far I'm pretty satisfied. Assembly went well. The Bluetooth+Linux interaction works good as well. So now I'm working on my WPM again 😅.

My new keeb arrived yesterday. I've had to fiddle around with the key layout a bit (it wanted backspace to be on the right hand under M key) and a few others, but I'll get it working.
Vial.rocks doesn't seem to want to work, but the app does. Its less intuitive than ZSA's Oryx, but I'm sure I'll work it out. Need to get used to no tenting though 😬
'Scuse the mess

I've been a little naughty and gone and got myself a new Keyboard. I'll soon be the owner of a Lily58 with Choc lowprokb ambiant twilights with a carry case.
I wanted a ZSA Voyager, but didn't want to pay twice (once for purchase, second for import) and the Lilly seemed a good compromise (and cheaper).
Just a little nervous about tenting, but I'll give it a go.

Your keyboard isn't cool enough to have a CQ key.
(This is from an SRT-3000 RTTY Send/Receive terminal from 1983. It also has keys dedicated to the prosigns SK, KN and DE)

OK I am in love!!?
This is my new keeb, my old one (ergonomic but not mechanical) kicked the bucket and I got this Royal Kludge A72 with linear cream switches as a replacement, because as it turns out I do not *love* non-mechanical keys
I'm just going to be typing all night. Like Ron Swanson. IMMA TYPE EVERY WORD I KNOW

#MechanicalKeyboards friends, I need your help!
#askFedi_Question_: what do you think about the Bokeh Ambients Silent switches?
I am thinking of buying the Piantor Pro BT from https://www.keebart.com/products/piantor-wireless
_Background_:
1. I had an IBM Model M #keeb for 20+ years
2. I moved to a Filco Majestouch 2 TKL with #Cherry MX Blues
3. I also had a GMMK 1 #MechanicalKeyboard with #Gateron Blues
4. Then I moved to an ErgoDash with #Kailh Whites Box (current daily driver). -
Here's the keyboard with its stickersheet. Its a "Keychron Q16 HE 8K". Its case and keycaps are ceramic and the switches are linear hall effect switches.
Before I got this board, I thought the typing experience might be heavier than it actually is. It feels almost cheep to type on. Im not a huge fan of the glossy caps. Ah well, at least it feels nicer than the MX blues I was using before.

I almost can't believe that I'm now the proud owner of a Think 6.5 V2! 😊
No joke, I've been trying to get my hands on this board for FIVE YEARS, and finally one came up for sale last week!
Absolutely chuffed to bits, sounds fantastic right out of the box, big shoutout to the original owner for doing a great job with the assembly 🙏
Caps are KBDfans Crayon, switches are Penguin tactiles for my fellow #keeb nerds 🤓

do I already have too many #mechanical #keyboards? perhaps. regardless, am I desperately curious to try the all-ceramic #Keychron #Q16 HE 8K? absolutely! 🤘⌨️🤘
