  1. "Bruce the kea—a species of alpine parrot native to New Zealand—lost his upper beak in an accident as a young bird. But that hasn’t stopped him from becoming the dominant male in his kea community (known as a “circus”) at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. According to a new paper published in the journal Current Biology, Bruce achieved his alpha status via a unique fighting method, essentially “jousting” with what remains of his beak."

  2. A disabled kea parrot, who is missing his upper beak is nonethless the dominant bird in his flock (circus) of 12. And he's totally chill about it, with the lowest stress hormone metabolites in the group.

  5. Finally, I have some good enough DHCP server.

It is a kea from ISC – the successor of EOLed dhcpd.

The moment, when I switched re0 interface configuration from DHCP to static IP and rebooted the server — was the most touching. The second one — when I disabled DHCP server in the D-Link router, started kea and restarted the router :drgn_hide:

Fortunately, the lines from connecting phone appeared in the kea log after some lenghty seconds :drgn_happy_blep:

  7. Wild Kea parrots love to get into anything they can, so it made sense that one poked its head into our car to see if there were any treasures inside. Thank goodness the window was only open part way. #birds #birding #kea #nature #newzealand frametoframe.ca/our-encounter-

  8. So ISC DHCP is apparently end of life, replaced by #Kea. Looks neat on the surface, I figured let's take a look.
My gateway runs #OpenBSD, but the Kea port is a little bit old. How hard could it be to roll a couple of version numbers? So I set up a vm to build and test.

Okay, so it turns out they completely changed the build process between 2.x and 3.0, to Meson. It seems to do both configure and make. Gotta update the port and learn how to deal with Meson. I'm sure it's wonderful.

Only ran into one real porting issue. Apparently OpenBSD does something different with bpf_timeval, and it's a different type? And Boost doesn't know how to convert it. Fortunately this was already a problem in nmap and worked around, so I copied the workaround.

Wait. Bpf? Nmap? Why does a dhcp server have its own network stack?!

Anyway I get it to compile and start to look at the installation part. That's when it dawns on me: THEY RUN EVERYTHING AS ROOT IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD TWENTY TWENTY-FIVE.

They split each section of the server into its own process, it'd be perfect for a least-privilege bind-ports-and-drop-privs model with everything as a different user. They do fuzzing as part of the build! They set LIBCPP_HARDENING_MODE! Well, they set it to FAST which only does like two checks but at least they set it!

And how about that, they recently posted a couple of LPE vulnerabilities that wouldn't have worked without root. (Should have checked that first...) I suspect there will be more.

Note: I did see their instructions for running as non-root. It's a completely manual process that only works on Linux (by assigning capabilities). Everything still runs as the same user, and that user has CAP_BIND_RAW. It's also not the default and literally zero people will do this.

  9. The kea (Nestor notabilis) is the world’s only alpine parrot—clever, curious, and full of character.

Photographed here mid-call, this juvenile is part of a nationally endangered species found only in New Zealand.

The Kea Conservation Trust estimates fewer than 7,000 individuals remain in the wild. Threats include lead poisoning, predation, habitat loss, and human conflict.

  11. The world’s only alpine parrot – the curious, clever, and often mischievous kea 🦜

Photographed here in its natural habitat in Otira, New Zealand, with the snow-covered Southern Alps as a backdrop. These endangered birds are full of personality and play a vital role in our mountain ecosystems.

  12. @beyondwatts Adding #kea to my github.com/gitbls/ndm DNS/DHCP tool has been on my list for a while. Maybe it's time to get off my arse and git 'er done.

  13. The homelab has been stable for a while now so it’s time to mix things up. Moving DHCP and DNS from the Synology NAS onto a primary/secondary set up in a pair of #raspberrypi that I had left over from the old cluster.

Today DHCP is moving to #Kea and once the dynamic DNS entries have been created, I’ll switch the DNS server over to #PowerDNS.

    What could possibly go wrong?

  17. OPNSense on the Zimaboard works fine, stable and fast enough (I am not using intrusion detection). Very low temperatures at 4 watts.

One option I also configured because ISC DHCP is getting replaced by KEA.

Not all options and extra parameters are in (compared to the normal version) but It is OK for my purposes.

One annoying (but maybe obvious) thing I need to remind you off is that a double MAC address is detected when entering reserved leases but NOT double assigned IP addresses unfortunately.
Causing network downs once both hosts are online and get a IP address. In my case after some days while during setups. So ^%&^%&^%&^%^%

  19. For these young Kea birds, there is always time to play. This apparently carefree behaviour helps establish long-lasting relationships between the youngsters, and even diffuses tension.
