The big bear is #402. She has been called the Mother of Katmai because she had numerous litters of cubs. Sadly and tragically, she was killed by another bear at Katmai two days ago. It was live on one of the live cams. I did not see it nor do I want to. I did, however, get to see this magnificent momma bear and her adorable last cub, 402 Jr (Hedgie), last year. Fortunately, Hedgie was emancipated this Spring and was spared the tragedy of her death.
