the "predecessor" book The Goblin Emperor also pretty good, though this not exactly a sequel as it expands on the experience of a minor character in the first book.

I’m reading one of Katherine Addison’s excellent goblin series books and it has the best little worldbuilding moment that describes the setting perfectly: when someone wants to read at night or stay warm they have to put coins in the gas meter. In their own home.

Katherine Addison (pseudonym of Sarah Monette) is the author of The Goblin Emperor, which was nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and and World Fantasy awards, and won the Locus Award. Got my Hugo vote.
I'm now reading her The Angel of the Crows. In my opinion, it is far, far better.

I decided to import these notes into #Obsidian for easy referencing. I found one that is just the name #SarahMonette from a book called Weird Detectives.
The explanation is that I often use collections of #ShortStories to find new authors to read. For Sarah Monette I have the moment of "discovery" timestamped: 2019-03-12 (22:45).

Second book I read was The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (fiction this time!)
Maia, a half-goblin and the fourth son (and least favourite son) of the Emperor of the Elflands, is unexpectedly thrust into power when his father and three half brothers die in an airship accident. He grew up secluded from the court so he's completely unprepared to face the challenges and intrigues of being Emperor.
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I love the wholesomeness! For a book about fantasy court intrigue, it's very wholesome and cuddly, and Maia's obliviousness in certain situations is adorable! I also liked the use of language (and thank you for the pronounciation guide and glossary at the back of the book!) In general, the worldbuilding was fantastic, and I'd love to see more of it in future installments.
However, the book had tension that was building up over the investigation of the airship accident and various court intrigues, all of which culminated in a somewhat underwhelming ending. I do understand that when you're writing a book with wholesome energy, you can't include court intrigue on the level of Game of Thrones. Still, it would have been nice to see some of Maia's enemies being more competent and shrewd. The plotlines all wrapped themselves up so well that it was noticable - everything went so well for the main chaarcter that it was almost unbelievable.
Overall I think it's a nice feel-good book, but the ending simply disappointed me too much to give it any higher than a 7/10.
