One of the big drawbacks of buying a #Macbook instead of a #Thinkpad/#Framework laptop is that if a key breaks on your laptop you are kinda screwed or rather you are looking at a rather huge bill.

So this is the punishment for being too lazy to maintain #Linux and opting for #OSX.

At any rate now using an external keyboard and when that isn't practical #Karabiner to the rescue using the "fn" key as modifier to double up some still working keys.

Naturally, while I am trying to persuade Github to run #IllumOS, I have an IllumOS VM here that I can try stuff out on before sending changes to Github. Something about the stack of my custom keymap, #Karabiner, Mac OS, #VirtualBox, and IllumOS means that the Sun-derived OS really doesn't like my genuine Sun keyboard. It seems to get caps lock randomly stuck.

I have no choice but to use this keyboard because I don't hate my fingers. But I do hate all software.

I just got rid of the god awful Logi-options+ (and the 2GB LLM it comes with) and replaced it with Karabiner Elements on my Mac to harvest the power of the gesture / thumb button. The trick was to use the usb mouse device instead of the keyboard and then the button was button6 (forward and backward are button4 and button5)

Ok. With #Ice, #Karabiner, #Shottr and (see attached screenshot), along with the native apps for messages, reminders, #Mona and #DayOne, I’m quite enjoying this #MacBook as a secondary machine. It’s nice to be able to just turn one’s brain off and.. NO DHRY. BAD. BAD DHRY. JUST BE NICE. (grabs left hand and sticks rusty nail through it Roy-Batty-like)

@oneeyedman en mi caso, durante una larga temporada tuve diversos problemas físicos en el brazo derecho. No solo por el uso del ordenador, acumulaban otros factores como las horas de práctica instrumental y las horas de lijar cosas.

Pero un día descubrí que si en vez de tocar el enter extendiendo el dedo meñique usaba un combo (entonces usaba #mac y #karabiner) como Ctrl+J, mis dolores se aliviaban bastantico.

Na koniec 2021 roku, jak przesiadałem się na swojego 14-calowego MacBooka Pro z M1 Pro, po razy pierwszy zrobiłem czystą przesiadkę, bez migracji danych, bez odtwarzania ich z poprzedniego komputera. Ręcznie przeniosłem to, co potrzebowałem.

Cały proces przenosi w sumie zajął mi wiele tygodni, bo przy okazji postanowiłem całkowicie przeorganizować strukturę swoich plików na dysku. Tak czy siak, pracuję tak bez zmian od listopada 2021 i wszystko spisuje się wzorowo, a pełną historię przenosin i komputera znajdziecie w archiwum, łącznie z czterema wpisami (część 1, część 2, część 3 i część 4) na temat moich aplikacji na macOS, z których korzystam na bieżąco.

Jednym z etapów przenosin była rezygnacja z aplikacji Karabiner Elements, nowszej i całkowicie przebudowanej wersji Karabinera, na rzecz wbudowaną możliwość przemapowania klawiatury w macOS za pomocą natywnych narzędzi.

Zmiana funkcja przypisanej do klawisza pod macOS za pomocą shell skryptu, bez Karabiner / Karabiner-Elements

Ta metoda pięknie działała pod macOS Monterey i Ventura, ale niestety przestała pod macOS Sonoma, a ja z braku czasu odkładałem rozwiązanie tego problemu, do dzisiaj.

Przypomnę, że korzystam z układu przypominającego HHKB na wszystkich swoich klawiaturach, nawet na tych, które mają klawisz CTRL w dolnym lewym rogu (HHKB tego klawisza nie ma, co widać na załączonym zdjęciu powyżej i ilustracji poniżej.

Jedyne, z czego nie korzystam, z ogromnym żalem, to przesunięcie klawisza Backspace o jeden rząd niżej, zaraz nad Enterem, co widać na ilustracji powyżej. Backspace to często naciskany klawisz i jego położenie w układzie HHKB jest zdecydowanie bardzo ergonomiczne. Niestety, pracuję również na MacBookach, więc nie mam fizycznie możliwości zmiany klawiszy na nim. Mogę jednak przemapować klawisze tak, aby sprawnie mi się pracowało na wszystkich swoich klawiaturach, dzięki czemu nie muszę się ich na nowo uczyć. To oznacza, że na każdej klawiaturze mam przemapowane następujące klawisze…

• Caps Lock → Lewy Control
• Prawy Command → Prawy Alt/Option
• Prawy Alt/Option → Prawy Command

W poprzedniej wersji tego przepisu korzystałem ze skryptu, który był wyzwalany za pomocą plista w LaunchAgents. To niestety przestało działać w macOS Sonoma, ale dzięki skryptowi Marcina Czachurskiego, przerobiłem swojego na taki, aby działał prawidłowo.

Plik plist nazwałem com.moridin.moridin_mac_keyboard_remap_v2.plist, a jego zawartość możecie sobie podejrzeć i pobrać stąd.

Jego struktura jest dosyć prosta i polega na wywołaniu komendy hidutil bezpośrednio z plista, zamiast wywoływać skrypt z tą komendą, jak to robiłem wcześniej. Najważniejsze będą tutaj pary usage id, które widzicie powyżej i oznaczają one następujące klawisze:

• 0x7000000e7 = Prawy Command
• 0x7000000e6 = Prawy Alt/Option
• 0x700000039 = Caps Lock
• 0x7000000e0 = Lewy Control

Same pary oznaczają, że zmieniam zachowanie klawiatury następująco:

• Prawy Command → Prawy Alt/Option
• Prawy Alt/Option → Prawy Command
• Caps Lock → Lewy Control

Finalnie prawe Command i Alt/Option są po prostu zamienione miejscami, aby łatwiej było mi wprowadzać polski znaki oraz dla spójności z Windows, gdzie prawy Alt znajduje się obok klawisza Spacji i służy jako modyfikator do dodawania naszych znaków diakrytycznych. Caps Lock całkowicie wywalam i zastępuję go klawiszem Lewy Control. Po tej zmianie z tego właściwego lewego Controla w ogóle przestaję korzystać – jak się okazało bardzo szybko po przesiadce na HHKB, ergonomia tego klawisza jest tak podła, że mięśnie błyskawicznie przyzwyczaiły się do nowego layoutu.

Tutaj znajdziecie ten sam skrypt, ale zamieniający tylko prawy Command z prawym Alt/Option, jeśli nie interesuje Was podmienianie Caps Locka.

Tabelę z usage id dla klawiatur USB znajdziecie albo tutaj w formie PDF-a, albo tutaj w dokumencie dla deweloperów macOS.

Finally! Managed to bind keyboard layout change to work with Emacs on Mac OS with the same key. Using #Karabiner, I map CapsLock (my lang change on MacOS) to Option-o, but just for #Emacs. Then in Emacs I bind M-o (keymap-global-set "M-o" 'toggle-input-method).

After #Karabiner didn't work for me, I've now managed to create a working key mapping between the #AlphaSmart 3000 and a modern Mac using #BetterTouchTool. Currently transferring the looong texts the previous owner left on this device 😅

I've had a #Jellycomb #bluetooth #keyboard for #Mac for a few years now, worked great when I first got it, but some macOS update broke the media keys on it (in fact anything on the top row: media, screen brightness, fn keys, etc.) and I couldn't find a fix at the time, so kinda lived with it.

I just found the rather ace #Karabiner-Elements (https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org) though, that does a bang-up job of remapping keys in #macOS

One of the most useful tricks I've put up is adding a 'Scratchpad' key to my laptop — in fact, I'm using it to write this post!

Here's how I did it:

1. Set up Keyboard Maestro with a workflow that toggles BBEdit's built-in 'Scratchpad' window. If the window is minimized, the workflow restores it, and vice versa.
2. Bind the Keyboard Maestro workflow so it's triggered by F20 (a function key not on any of my keyboards).
3. On my desktop keyboard, map a macro key to F20. On my Macbook, use Karabiner to bind tapping the Globe/Fn key to F20.

That's it! No matter what I'm doing, I can now tap a key and have a quick text scratchpad that's useful for writing and editing things in a real, resizable, doesn't-lose-content-if-the-browser-crashes window.

(For bonus points, I used Karabiner to bind that same F20 key so that if it's pressed -with- another key, it acts like the Super modifier instead!)

With karabiner-elements, you can disable the built in (mac) keyboard. This allows me to place my custom keyboard right on top and not risk any keypresses!
