  18. For my fellow #history enthusiasts, I present to you this week's "This Day In History Picks the NFL Winners"... This is something I do for the family's NFL pick'em pool. Some people use the Alphabet, some people actually look at the expert predictions... I look to history.

This was written on Sunday morning before the majority of games started...

(Caveat emptor - I wrote this by exclusively pulling from Wikipedia, plagiarizing a whole lot of it, and not citing sources at all. I even deleted the footnote notation numbers in the sentences I plagiarized. I have no regrets, and no shame. I also didn't proofread... much. So take this as you will.)

So, on October 18th, 1540, Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto's forces destroyed the fortified town of Mabila in present-day Alabama, killing Chief Tuskaloosa. There is some back story here wherein it's explained that the Spaniards during this expedition made a habit of and a reputation for - when encountering Native Americans - demanding supplies, women, and porters, and kidnapping the local Chief to guarantee them "safe passage" through the territory, as you do when you want to make good friends as you visit them in their hometowns.

Chief Tuskaloosa was the ruler of many territories in what is now Alabama and was equally feared by his vassals and the neighboring nations. Contemporary records describe him as being very tall and well built, with some of the chroniclers saying Tuskaloosa stood a foot and a half taller than the Spaniards, placing him at around 7 feet tall. His name, derived from the western Muskogean language elements tashka and losa, means "Black Warrior".

When the Spaniards encountered Chief Tuskaloosa, he told them to take a hike - to the "fortified" city of Mabila, ruled by one of chief Tuskaloosa's vassals (presumably as a trap). First of all... what do we mean by "fortified"? The walled compound of Mabila, one of many encountered by the Spaniards in their exploration, was enclosed in a thick stuccoed log wall, 16.5-ft high! It was made from wide tree trunks tied with cross-beams and covered with mud/straw stucco. The fortress was defended by Muskogee warriors, who shot arrows from slits and turrets on the wall. Mabila was essentially a Native American castle!

Tuskaloosa went with them and asked de Soto to stay a while. When de Soto refused, Tuskaloosa told him again to take a hike, then withdrew to another room, and refused to talk further. A lesser chief was asked to intercede, but he would not. One of the Spaniards "seized him by the cloak of marten-skins that he had on, drew it off over his head, and left it in his hands; whereupon, the Indians all beginning to rise, he gave him a stroke with a cutlass, that laid open his back, when they, with loud yells, came out of the houses, discharging their bows." The Spaniards barely escaped from the castle. The Indians closed the gates and "beating their drums, they raised flags, with great shouting."

De Soto then decided to attack the town, because of course he did. In the battle that followed, Spanish historian Elvas records: "The Indians fought with so great spirit that they, many times, drove our people back out of the town. The struggle lasted so long that many Catholics, weary and very thirsty, went to drink at a pond nearby, tinged with the blood of the killed, and returned to the combat." The Spaniards eventually just decided to burn the place down, setting fire to the entire walled city.

The exact count of Indian dead is not known, but Spanish accounts at the time estimated that between 2,500 and 3,000 Indians had been killed by the raging fires within the city's walls. Spanish killed in action were either 22, 18, 25, 20, or 82 based upon the contemporary chroniclers of the time, with another 48 or more Spaniards dying from their wounds within days following the battle. According to Garcilaso, "Most of the dead were women" who had followed their husbands, sweethearts, and others, to witness their glorious victory over the Castilians. In the five centuries of warfare between indigenous tribes and the European colonizers, the battle of Mabila is regarded as the first of the bloodiest battles ever fought in North America.

As for the Indian leader Tuskaloosa, neither he nor his body was ever found...

How does that lead us to Football? One can, of course, attempt to make the argument that sport has the potential to replace warfare... but let's not be silly. However, stay with me here...

James Francis "Jim" Thorpe was born in 1887 and was a Native American super-athlete who won Olympic gold medals and played professional football, baseball, and basketball. A citizen of the Sac and Fox Nation, he was the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States in the Olympics. As a youth, he attended the infamous Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he was a three-time All-American for the school's football team under coach Pop Warner (yes, Pop Warner is a real guy!).

When he was done playing for the NY Giants MLB team, Thorpe joined the Canton Bulldogs American football team in 1915, helping them win three professional championships, and found the American Professional Football Association, which was later renamed the NFL.

Thorpe also played for and coached the "Oorang Indians" of the NFL from LaRue, Ohio (near Marion). The franchise was a novelty team put together by Walter Lingo to market his Oorang (Airedale Terrier) dog kennels! (I'm not about to research why Airedale Terriers are called "Oorangs" because this email is long enough and none of you are reading all of it anyway... but trust me when I say I'm looking it up.)

All of the players of the Oorang team were Native American, with Jim Thorpe serving as its leading player and coach. The team played in the NFL in 1922 and 1923. Of the 20 games they played over the two seasons, only one was played at "home" in nearby Marion. With a population well under a thousand people, LaRue remains the smallest town ever to have been the home of an NFL franchise, or any professional team in any league in the United States.

Was Thorpe the reincarnation of Tuskaloosa? Maybe so. How does this help me make my picks? Well, I'll tell you ("He's going to tell! He's going to tell! He's going to tell! He's going to tell!")...

So, the Green Bay Packers are the smallest market NFL team with a market size of 471,000 people (about the size of Long Beach, which has a population of 450,000! Imagine the "Long Beach Packers" having a famous professional sports team! Imagine!). And while their media market includes the greater Green Bay area, the city alone only contains 107,015 people. That means Lambeau Field can hold 76% of Green Bay’s entire population!

    So, go Packers.

And for my second pick... I'd like to go with the Chiefs, but I've already picked them.

So... since the Spanish Conquistadors made so many Native Americans "former" I guess I'll pick the "former" Redskins - the Washington Commanders? That may be in bad taste, but just go with it. It's spooky season, and the ghosts of the Indians are coming back for revenge! Yeah, that's it...
