Here's NBC's story on how the crew at Kangala Wildlife Rescue lured the sausage dog out of the wilderness with a scent trail made from Valerie's toys and her owner's shirt.

  4. Dogs are being unleashed on #KangarooIsland Dudley Peninsula to get rid of #feralcats, which kill native wildlife and spread diseases in sheep. They're the latest tool in one of the world's most ambitious and high tech feral cat eradication programs. Only a couple of hundred cats left it's hoped an attack on all fronts this year could almost wipe them out. #evasivespecies #eradication #SouthAustralia

  6. A wildlife ranger says the discovery of a #beached #whale on #SouthAustralia's #KangarooIsland is a "peculiar" occurrence.

The National Parks & Wildlife Service South Australia ranger told ABC Radio on Monday the creature, discovered at #AmericanRiver on the eastern end of the island, "appeared to be a #beakedwhale of some sort".

He added it was rare for the deep-sea animal to turn up where it did, but was likely the result of a "natural process". #auspol

  7. "During the horror 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, which tore across more than half of the island, destroying countless native animals and protected plant species, it's believed feral population #pig numbers were also reduced by an astonishing 90 per cent —an unexpected but welcomed outcome"

Consider that Kangaroo Island — Australia's 3rd largest at 4430 km2 — is just over half the size of Corsica

  9. Koalas crushed, starving as Kangaroo Island's blue gum plantations come down

"As the plantations come, down dislocated koalas are hurting recovering native vegetation."

"Wildlife workers and researchers say Kangaroo Island koalas displaced by the removal of controversial Tasmanian blue gum plantations are starving — and an urgent solution is required...We're seeing koalas starving and being displaced in large numbers and this is just not good enough. Mrs Welz said since November last year, her group had cared for numerous animals with crush injuries."

"What we … would love to see is a sacrificial plantation where healthy koalas can be put in to live out their natural lives," she said."

"Koalas are not indigenous to Kangaroo Island and were introduced in the 1920s...the island's vegetation had not fully recovered from the Black Summer bushfires, and as koalas displaced by the plantation shutdown moved into farmland and areas of roadside vegetation, over-browsing was occurring."

"The spokesperson said the department was aware of the potential impacts on remnant native vegetation as koalas were forced to move, but that it was not considering acquiring or leasing part of the remaining unburnt plantation as a refuge."

"The animals are being displaced as the island's timber plantations come down."

""Locals say a koala management plan is needed as displaced animals are destroying native plants."
