  1. "In other words, Kallis argued (contra Foster) that socialism is not a sufficient condition for recomposing the ‘metabolic rift’ and rebalancing socio-ecological relations. Planning to ‘live with enough’ is something that the left needs to assume as a goal, rather than treat as an automatic result of the socialisation of production."

Second, and perhaps most significantly, overcoming capitalism is no guarantee that a more sustainable socio-ecological configuration will come about."

  12. @alx I loved Giorgos #Kallis' talk just now! - about the already existing #Degrowth practices in #Ikaria #Greece. Especially as this is exactly what I think and write about too, and where, again, I feel anthropology and in particular #HistoricalEcology can make a massive contribution. In fact, let me share here a thread I did about this a while ago here. There are already existing #Degrowth practices throughout the world #ClimateDiary

  17. @DrALJONES

Outstanding article from 2021, thankyou Émile P Torres and Dr Jones tor sharing.

To all those in the eco-related movements I have seen here. To almost all of those in any #ClimateJustice movement or hose concerned with #ClimateChange #EcologicalEconomics #AntiCapitalism #BioDiversity and their followers. To those who just restate the problem and endlessly re-post the data, or hand-wave about "it's urgent we do something", to #Hickel #Raworth #Kallis. To those who say "let's be optimistic and wait for a technological unicorn", #ProfessorSamFankhauser, and all peddlers of childish romanticicsm. To those who repeatedly outline the Utopia we had or could have again if we fixed the problems (*see list below.)

  22. @gerrymcgovern

These #degrowth principles are obviously well thought out. I like #kallis and his work. However, they are nothing without political success.

Polling for the 2023 election in Spain summarised here:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_
shows that support for Unidas Podemos, the key political grouping Kallis cites, is declining.

Are there any examples, anywhere in the world, of political parties adopting similar degrowth principles winning, or going UP in the polls?

[Edit: I should point out that the Spanish coalition Government, with its "junior partner" UP, is doing some things in the right direction commondreams.org/news/2022/09/]

  27. Went to Kallis on Monday, a calm day, an overcast day, warmer in both air and water than it ‘looks’.

    Painted it.
Realizing, I enjoy ‘not trying to make it look exactly like what I am painting, rather, inspired by, and letting it become what it becomes.’ I think that’s a liberating viewpoint for me, a playful and more lighthearted way of approaching this #dailydrawing-project of mine.
