  1. Stopped for #kakigoori #かき氷 after the exhibition, portions as big as youngest child’s head? They couldn’t finish it… not surprised as the strawberry sauce was jam-like and for whatever reason our kids don’t like jam yet. I had my fill 😋🍧

    Edit: Adding alternative hashtag #kakigori

  2. Sei Shōnagon (清少納言) describes a dessert created by scraping ice shavings with a metal knife into a metal bowl. It was flavoured with the sweet sap of arrowroot (葛 'kuzu vine')...not so different from today's kakigōri!

  3. 🧊KAKIGŌRI🍧

One summer treat Kyōtoites cannot do without is 'kakigōri' (かき氷), a shaved-ice dessert covered in all kinds of deliciousness.

The first reference we have to kakigōri in Japan is in Chapter 42 of Sei Shōnagon's (清少納言 966-1017) 'The Pillow Book' (枕草子).

  4. Kicked off いも・くり・かぼちゃ season with this excellent sweet potato kakigoori yesterday, which was delicious and hearty despite turning to soup in 0.2 seconds in the heat 😂 There were lots of delicious sweet potato pieces inside.
