Stopped for #kakigoori #かき氷 after the exhibition, portions as big as youngest child’s head? They couldn’t finish it… not surprised as the strawberry sauce was jam-like and for whatever reason our kids don’t like jam yet. I had my fill 😋🍧

It was the influential food merchant Nakagawa Kahee (中川嘉兵衛 1817-97) that made kakigōri accessible to everyone.

He opened a regular shipping route from Hokkaidō to Yokohama, allowing for 'Hyōsuiten' (氷水店), the first kakigōri store, to open in Bashamichi (馬車道) in 1872.

The first reference we have to kakigōri in Japan is in Chapter 42 of Sei Shōnagon's (清少納言 966-1017) 'The Pillow Book' (枕草子).

Kicked off いも・くり・かぼちゃ season with this excellent sweet potato kakigoori yesterday, which was delicious and hearty despite turning to soup in 0.2 seconds in the heat 😂 There were lots of delicious sweet potato pieces inside.
