@thorstenzoeller While I don't have much experience with "nvi" (assuming it is very similar to vim). I switched from neovim to kakoune like 5-6 years ago for the same reasons. And haven't had a compelling reason to switch away from Kakoune since.
Kakoune is basically vi/vim but re-imagined with better keybindings. The core developers try really hard to keep features out. It doesn't have a configuration "language", so most plugins are cli scripts that work with stdin..
Strongly recommend trying it. While Neovim/Vim was a huge realization for me on what text editing could be like, Kakoune was another realization for me.
