It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.
Today's movie was: The Secret of the Telegian / 電送人間 (1960)
Apparently a successor to The H-Man (1958), it also features a shape-shifting human. Directed by Jun Fukuda, the #film is a serious work from start to finish, beautifully shot too, nothing to do with the characteristic goofiness of his later films. Looking at you, Son of Godzilla (1967).
I give it 3½/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Varan the Unbelievable (1962)
The Americanization of Varan (1958), and unlike Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) — which uses body doubles to convince you the new main character was always there — and Gigantis, the Fire Monster (1959) — which mostly changes dialog — this one uses only around 10 minutes of the original #film.
I give it 1½/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Gigantis, the Fire Monster (1959)
This #film is the Americanization of Godzilla Raids Again (1955), and unlike Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) they don't go to the trouble of changing the plot, introducing body doubles, and trying to deceive the audience. The dubbing turns what was a bad movie into an unwatchable one.
I give it 1½/5 Kaiju

October isn't finished and neither am I!
This #film is an Americanization of Godzilla (1954), and a quite competent one if I might say so myself. With heavy use of body doubles and dubbed audio, it tries to gaslight you into believing the main character was there all along.

Today's movie was: Terror of Mechagodzilla / メカゴジラの逆襲 (1975)
#Toho's last #film from the showa era was a sequel to the infamous Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974). Aliens, robots, international spies, and kaiju are back, but the ancient deities are noticeably missing. Director Ishirō Honda did as much as he could with the hand he was dealt: not much.

This mess, which I like to refer to as "the pinnacle of absurdity" was of course directed by Jun Fukuda...

The third to last #film in the #Toho showa era features at least some degree of originality. Mixing spy and #scifi elements with his characteristic humor, Jun Fukuda offers a fun movie for kids and adults alike, plus, there's a robot!

A soulless #film made to please an ignorant producer that couldn't recognize true genius if it hit him in the face. Chasing the golden age of kaiju cinema Shinichi Sekizawa and Jun Fukuda ended up giving us exactly what nobody asked for: more of the same.

Another #film made with kids in mind. This time #Godzilla faces a foe born out of industrial pollution.
Despite the convoluted story and overall goofiness, the film shines for its originality and willingness to experiment. The edition is fantastic when it works, which sadly isn't always.
I give it 3/5 Kaiju

#Toho starts the 70s with a middle of the pack #film that fails equally to commit to the kaiju and #scifi genre. Plus, the problematic depictions of aboriginal tribes are back, now in the form of people that apparently stayed way too long in the tanning bed.

Today's movie was: Son of Godzilla / 怪獣島の決戦 ゴジラの息子 (1967)
When I said I hoped the #film was about the hardships of raising a child in a post-nuclear world I wasn't being serious, but Jun Fukuda certainly thought Id' be a good idea.
Convoluted and unimpressive, but way too funny to ignore. Son of Godzilla is the kind of bad movie worth a watch.

Today's movie was: King Kong Escapes / キングコングの逆襲 (1967)
A Japanese-American co-production that fails miserably as both: as a Japanese #film, and as an American film. The cartoonishly ridicule plot is due to the movie being based precisely on a cartoon, and the lifeless performances would made the average cardboard cut-out look like a Broadway star.

A veritable shake up in the kaiju formula, not only because it's the first #film not directed by Ishirō Honda since Godzilla Raids Again (1995) but also because of the more action-focused plot. It has its problem, but it's an interesting entry all the same.

#Toho's second imagining of #Frankenstein is a mediocre work from start to finish. We have a saying in the Dominican Republic: "rice with mango", it doesn't refer to a tropical delicacy but to an utter mess. This #film is, precisely, the embodiment of an an arroz con mango.

The first act of the #film promises to explore the aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing in a deeper way than any previous movie; the rest of it could be summarized as "shenanigans ensue". The last three and a half minutes of it left me with a big question: WTF?

Although formulaic and lazily put together, the #film is the kind of junk food capable of fooling you into thinking you just had a nice meal. Since I went blindly the spectacle of it took me by surprise, but at the end of the day it's junk food all the same.

The fourth time Godzilla appears in the big screen. Second time for Mothra. This #film can be described with a single adjective: underwhelming. Mothra vs. Godzilla is the answer to a question nobody asked, and the poorly written script is a reflection of how little they cared for the project.

Today's movie was: Dogora / 宇宙大怪獣ドゴラ (1964)
The #film is mostly an exploration of human greed and our relation with nature and the resources it provides us with. I found the B-plot more entertaining than the main plot but all in all it was a fun time. The cat and mouse dynamic of the two main characters made it a fun watch at least. Also, no racism!

A pleasant surprise after the disappointing — and racist — King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). #Toho abandons the giant monster formula and the result is a brilliant, intimate, classic #horror ensemble #film. It's already one of my all time favorite horror movies.

Visually impressive, economically written, and — as its predecessor — funny as hell. The new decade brought comedy to the kaiju genre but sadly racism tagged along — yes, more blackface, even worst than Mothra. Story-wise it's very flawed, despite how well-rounded characters are.

A bit disappointing. After Godzilla and Radon I expected a third kaiju to be more spectacular. What I got was Godzilla's little brother. He was not even good enough to terrorize Tokyo so they gave him a small village. The production value was a big step down too. Black and white in 1958, why?

Today's movie was: The H-Man / 美女と液体人間 (1958).
Another #scifi #film. This one abandons the idea of big monsters entirely and on a smaller conflict. It has a certain American B-movie flavor but at the same time it's better than 99% of the B-movies I have watched. I would have liked it better if a giant monster destroyed the city.

It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.
Today's movie was: The Mysterians / 地球防衛軍 (1957).
An ambitious #scifi #film on par with the original #Godzilla in more than one aspect. I feel they shoehorned the giant monster at the last minute to capitalize on the kaiju craze of the 1950s, but that doesn't take much away from the movie as a whole.
I give it 3½/5 Kaiju

I didn't expect this #film to be as well-written as it was. All I expected was "big mad dinosaur destroys Tokyo", I got that and so much more!
From military worship to the consequences of scientific progress, this movie has it all.
I give it 4/5 Kaiju
