Story Pile: Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War
It’s fun when the starting paragraph for this kind of article involves just a spool of text so that it looks like I’ve meaningfully introduced the thing by just giving its proper name and all I’ve really given you is random trivia and proof that title translation is actually a good thing we should appreciate more. Kaguya-Sama, Love Is War, also known as something you won’t need to know unless you can read Japanese in which case you already know all this, is a 2016 manga that wrapped up in 2022. Along the way it spun off movies and live-action TV series and probably novels and surely there’s a board game, and most importantly for this article, it got an anime, which is probably all you know about it, if again, you’re reading this in English. It was written by Aka Akasaka, whose work I have already examined once and this time I won’t have to mention the commonality of incest kink material and oh boy we are off to the races.
Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War is the anime adaptation from 2018, which is expected to conclude with the final movie, announced in December 2025, that’s meant to be a unique ending to the anime series, and it’s that anime adaptation I want to talk about today, explicitly not the manga, and not the spinoff manga, and not the other spinoff manga.
Spoiler Warning: I’m not really going to tell you anything about the plot of Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War that isn’t obvious just watching the premise of the first episode. This isn’t really a series with a meaningful ambiguation about where it’s going. If this is a mystery story, it’s like Columbo, the destination is absolutely obvious and the novelty comes in how.
