1965 Kaanapali Airport Maui Hawaii Postcard

Built in 1962 by Amfac, Inc., it served the growing Kaanapali resort area, primarily for Royal Hawaiian Air Service (RHAS).
It closed in 1986 due to safety concerns, limiting operations to just RHAS before shutting down.

Within roughly an hour it was clear there was serious trouble afoot. Thick plumes of black smoke rose into the skies over #Lahaina and #kaanapali and only seemed to get larger.

With power out and cell service spotty we were now cut off mostly from the outside world.

The amazing staff was doing their best to keep everything together and our only communication came via their security staff and the radios they had.

Soon we would realize how devastating it would all be.

We were at the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach approximately 3 miles north of the #lahainafire. Initially when we awoke Tuesday the high winds had knocked out power only. Annoying but didn’t seem like a big problem.

We drove to the Safeway in Lahaina and got some food around lunchtime. Chaotic but safe.
