I am reasonably familiar with docker and the security implications / bag of grenades it can be. Kubernetes is something >other people™< do at my place of work, and I would rather improve the ecosystem than learn another deployment stack. To be honest.

I haven't had to do much with k8s in quite some time. I expect things may have evolved since then and it's time for a refresher. Does anyone have an "intro to" site or document they'd care to recommend? A book would be fine too but those tend to lag the current state of tech.

Well, 2024 was the first year I’ve been sick to a degree I’ve never been before. It started right in January and by the time June rolled around, I had Legionnaires Disease, HMPV, RSV and COVID-19, spaced out by about two months each. It wasn’t fun, but finally I was back in shape in October to run Portland Marathon, but didn’t get to do that either due to a family emergency. But now everythings back to order!

What is the state of Kubernetes in 2024 and how is 2025 going to look?
Kubernetes turned 10 years old as a technology platform and has matured to a point where we don’t have to argue about the need for an orchestration platform anymore. The container orchestration wars are over, were over a while ago and there’s nothing on the horizon that I can see that will replace Kubernetes in the foreseeable future.

Back in in April, 2021, the Release Team merged a Kubernetes Enhancement Proposal (KEP) changing the Kubernetes release cycle from four releases a year (once a quarter) to three releases a year and that was basically both an admission that 4 releases a year was too fast for folks to keep up and also that COVID had an impact on people’s ability to contribute. So here we are with the third and last release of K8 for 2023!

So right now my Infosec exchange feed is full of people traveling to Vegas, of course and a lot of activities directed towards finding and reporting on security issues. One of the most forward companies in the K8 security space is Aqua Security.

Since we’re talking about security already, why not cover the basics in case you’re someone using a Linux server or workstation somewhere in your network. I am a huge fan of revisiting basics over and over again, just to make sure everyone is getting the same message, consistently and frequently. It deepens and freshens knowledge of any topic. Some call it wax on, wax off or sharpening the saw.

Lots and lots has been written about Red Hat’s changes in releasing source code for RHEL and I talked about it in the last show or two. As with everything, people are calming down after a frenzy of discussion and disagreements and the waters are calming a little bit. The distros competing with RHEL have made their business decisions and are moving on with their lives. An assessment by John maddog Hall is worth noting in this discussion

Earlier this week, I posted about Rep Nate Shannon introducing HB 4020, which would repeal all the retention language out of Michigan's 3rd Grade Reading Law. That bill is now in committee.
Now, Senator Dayna Polehanki has introduced SB 12 (2023), and it is the exact same legislation as HB 4020.
With both chambers now having identical bills in committee, this appears to be fast tracking!

Today, MI State Representative Nate Shannon introduced HB 4020(2023) which is an amendment to #Michigan Public Act 308 (2016), known as the 3rd Grade #Reading Law.
HB 4020 strikes the retention language out of Act, but leaves the rest intact.
This is a good start, but if we need to do more by updating the language regarding interventions to include science of reading!
