hi, reiterating our constant ask. which I hate doing but things haven't got personally better for us right now.

I'm the main breadwinner for my spouse and I and there has been no bread to win. I haven't had a single gig this month or last, and we have bills racking up and coming due.

before I go to bed for the night, one last plea.

my spouse and I are both queer disabled (Jewish and Jew-in-progress) and living in Los Angeles, one of the most expensive cities to live in in the first place. neither of us can work.

on top of our usual brokeness? we are going to have a lot of expenses incurred by top surgery, such as getting easy food that I will be able to eat, especially for the days where I'm in the hospital—my hysterectomy and top surgery are combined for a general yeet-it-all; due to medical complications, my surgery will not be outpatient and I will be in the hospital between three to five days, depending upon how long I end up needing opioid pain medication and until pain can be managed just with ibuprofen, as well as mobility limitations. there's just so much that will become more difficult and cost money we don't currently have.

to be up-front and transparent, I currently have less than $90 in my bank account, spouse has even less, and most of which is already earmarked for bills next month. every time I think I'm getting a little in my bank account more happens; I recently needed to replace my sleeping bag (which helps me sleep, rather than being needed for cold or anything). we have been living on mutual aid for a while now and while all y'all always come through, it's been rough recently.

working on my journaling for the conversion class I'm teaching. I figured that at least for the journal assignments, I'll do them too, because the class is very small—four students—so that everyone gets the individual attention needed. I love that this is one of the things that I'm getting to do as a rabbinical student, and I'm learning a lot from just working on putting the class together.

definitely also that there's far more Judaism than I can fit in one class, even year-long as it is; some of these sections will end up being very much the CliffNotes for the subject. I'm taking a fair amount from my semester-long introduction to Judaism class, and then expanding thereof. but there are sections where we're also going very deep into subject matter, so it all balances out.

I've often said that gerim end up being far, far more knowledgeable about Judaism than main Jews from birth, because they actually take the time to learn and study and they're interested, whereas many Jews from birth go through periods of disillusionment and distancing or lack of connection. I know I did, I'm still somewhat off the derech, and will never reach the level of observance that I once had because.that's no longer meaningful to me.

but, #Jwitter #Mazeldon, I'm getting a great amount of my own reconnection through this act of teaching.

going to, after top surgery, be running a conversion class on a small private Discord server, under the supervision of and with full blessing of my rabbi.

it's going to be from late September this year, through after High Holy Days next year, with being sponsored for conversion and convening a beit din a part of the process for those who want who finish the course satisfactorily.

and that just means participate earnestly and honestly, it's not like there are going to be grades on things. any quizzes are just to gauge progress of my own efficacy as a teacher. it's my first time doing this sort of a thing as a rabbinical student (of course I will be running any dilemmas, my syllabus, and any time I have questions as I build up the class lesson plans and lectures etc by my rabbi, so that I'm not missing something important), which is pretty awesome and exciting. it's free as a service to my communities, and because everyone will need to put up with me as a first time instructor as well.

I've already filled all four intended slots that I made the class for. but I am leaving a fifth student slot a possibility if someone expresses the desire or need, and I think they'll fit and mesh with the group of students that I already have. I guess attn #Jewish #Jwitter #Mazeldon?

the class will be synchronous text discussions Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday (two out of three each week, tbd based on participant availability and need, third day office hours) in the evening Pacific time, between 1700 and 2200 all told depending again on everyone's schedule, with asynchronous and non-scheduled interaction on Discord in between class sessions, and monthly to every other month homework assignments.

asaadljhkdsgjkkljfkfadsfgfhgdfg. so excited to spend most of the next month putting things together. I did a rough outline of all the channels that I'm going to need, using a new channel for each lesson/unit/assignment. the other thing is the class will also do parshat hashavua each week too, using Discord threads for the material in the parent channel of the particular book, which makes me learn them better too!

disappointed in the new Trope Trainer that it doesn't seem to suuport #Ashkenazi pronunciations at all. even though I have set it as my preference it always defaults to modern mainstream pronunciation which is basically #Sephardi.

#Jwitter #Mazeldon possible rant incoming lol. and like, I vividly remember when my #HebrewSchool switched what pronunciation they were teaching us, when I started to get told I was wrong and made fun of for having tof/sof as a distinction, and so many other little intricacies of pronunciation that just get flattened in modern Hebrew. and I think I was about nine years old, but I swore then and there that I was going to continue to daven the way my zayde did and pronounce things the way my zayde did and nobody could make me change it.

and that's how I've done things the last twenty-four years, so I'm not going to start collapsing my distinctions between consonants and vowels just because that's what is taught now and that's what the software now says.

it's a sort of assimilation that gets shoved on us because it fits better with the desires of the modern political state, as well, and the ever further right party lines. those lines don't have room to preserve and promote the huge variety of #Judaisms and customs other than the mainstream

if it doesn't give the rest of them as options, it no longer works towards the preservation aspect that was integral to the original Trope Trainer. and that's all of our loss.

so I called her out further. I didn't actually tag her, I'm leaving it up to her if she wants to come forward. I suspect she won't be doing that.

I hope she sleeps well at night knowing the harm that was done by her stupid fucking self-help book and I hope Hashem opens up the earth and swallow her into Sheol for the avodah zarah of worshipping at the altar of capitalism and work.

I hope she chokes on that book every day for the rest of her life.
