  1. Thoughts on this war:

-- I am glad there is an end to fighting. Jaw jaw is better than war war.

-- There was no just cause for this war, either on the part of Israel or of the USA.

-- Trump did not have the legal authority to wage this war.

-- Trump's probable motivation was to secure a place in the history books as the president who finally crushed a long standing foe of the USA. Netanyahu saw Trump's vanity and post-Venezuela triumphalism as providing the opportunity to cripple, if not destroy, a regime hostile to Israel's existence and save his won political skin in doing so. Neither constitutes a legitimate intention.

-- The Iranian regime is repressive domestically and destructive beyond its borders. No sympathy is due to this reactionary government. Nevertheless, changing this regime is a task for the people of Iran, not the governments of other countries.

-- Alternatives to war had not been exhausted. Both the US and Israel could have maintained a policy of containment and deterrence. War should always be a last resort.

-- Trump's readiness to believe in Netanyahu's promises of the swift collapse of the Iranian regime is to be faulted, as US intelligence services and credible sources outside the federal government warned that this swift collapse was unlikely. In short, there was no reasonable assurance of success.

-- Mossad's skill at booby trapping pagers does not entail competence at gathering political intelligence.

-- The violence used in this war caused foreseeable and avoidable death, injury, and destruction.

-- As a result of this war, the Iranian regime's ability to repress its own citizens has been strengthened. By their aggressive and ill-informed interference, Trump and Netanyahu have set back the prospect of peaceful and lasting change within Iran.

-- Over most of the world, this war has caused economic harm and undermined trust and security.

-- In the region, this war has aggravated tensions and made the prospect of the peaceful coexistence of peoples diverse in nationality and religion even more difficult to achieve.

This war has been a political and humanitarian disaster, for which both the USA and Israel deserve full blame.

  5. As a Lutheran I’m of the APAB-persuasion by default. I will, however, admit that the current pontifex does a good job of trying to prove me wrong.

  6. "But no gain can be worth the life of the weakest, children, or families. No cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood."

As Emily Singer says, we all know who Pope Leo was talking about when he made that post yesterday on social media.

  9. "Pope Leo XIV on Friday issued a sweeping condemnation of war, continuing to reject the idea that military action can bring about peace or freedom as the Trump administration and other leaders use religion to justify the U.S.-Israel war in Iran."

  10. "Its source is the very Christian faith Hegseth has so often praised within the Pentagon. Just war theory is a distinctly Christian moral innovation that we must not discard."

  11. "It is instead flirting with dispensing with that standard altogether, using the language and symbols of our faith while ignoring its substance. …

Trump and Hegseth seem to want to wage war unencumbered by the task of protecting the dignity of human life. But that task is not about 'politically correct and overbearing rules' or any other boogeymen of Hegseth’s imagination."

  12. "American Christians can’t pretend we haven’t seen what our leaders have done this spring. Ours is no longer a government interested in haggling over the finer points of just war theory, a Scripture-shaped standard of ethical conduct in warfare, to defend a military intervention."

  13. 🧵 1/5

My current thoughts on the war against Iran.

In the first place, I want this war to end as soon as possible. I want an end to the killing, maiming, and terror.

This clearly an unjust war. No matter how odious the regime in Tehran actually is, this war, like other "preventive" wars, does not meet the conditions required for being termed a just war. Most of the justifications the US and Israel have put forward have claimed that war now will prevent a graver conflict against a monstrous enemy in the future. This kind of justification is rejected by almost all jurists and philosophers. The doctrine of "preventive" war is in fact a formula for perpetual armed strife.

I also find both Trump's use of terms like "fun" and "excursion" with reference to the war and Hegseth's naked bloodlust disgusting.

Although Hegseth proclaims his faith in Jesus, his real devotion is to Ares; if only he could be locked up like the god he worships!

  14. A quotation from Wendell Berry

We know that war depresses public dialogue and debate, enlarges executive power, diminishes citizens’ rights, encourages governmental secrecy and deception, and deforms the outlines of human decency. Thus a government making war for the sake of peace, freedom, and human dignity — as it will never cease to declare — will curtail the rights of prisoners, resort to torture, deny its errors, exaggerate its virtues, demonize the enemy, and (as is inevitable in modern war) kill many innocent people, including, of course, many children.

  15. A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt

Much has been said in this country about not wanting to participate in foreign wars and people who have said it, must now face the fact that foreign wars come very close to our own shores. We will always have not only the religious groups, but many groups who feel that war is wrong. I cannot imagine how anyone could feel otherwise with the picture before them today. But when force not only rules in certain countries, but is as menacing to all the world, as it is today, one cannot live in a Utopia which prays for different conditions and ignores those which exist.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) First Lady of the US (1933-45), politician, diplomat, activist

  17. Well that's an interesting strategic development. Warn all residents in northern Gaza to evacuate south, pound anyone who remains into dust as presumptive warriors... and then perhaps flip it in a month and allow residents, southerners and northerners, into the North... vetted... and then pound into dust southern war infrastructure and anyone who remains in the south as presumptive Hamas.

It's harsh beyond words, but it gives residents a chance to avoid being used as human shields by Hamas as the IDF goes after Hamas fighters and infrastructure in tunnels.

It's a way to deny Hamas the opportunity to commit the war crime they are currently committing of hiding behind human shields.

I'm just speculating of course, but this seems possible, and would certainly be justified and welcome.

OK, I see where you are coming from now. I do not have a fundamental objection to how the allied Air Forces operated in 1944 and 1945 over Europe. (Some operations are debatable, but the overall campaign was necessary.)

I am even sympathetic to the bombing of Hiroshima.
My father, deployed in German in 1945 fired his pistol in joy when that happened and he learned that he would not die as a soldier invading Japan, where he was about to be shipped to fight.

I accept civilian deaths in the context of a just war, but I do not think that they should be slaughtered simply for being on the other side.

I do not wish to see the Palestinians slaughtered, but they have given shelter to Hamas (partly out of lack of choice, and partly out of sympathy) and civilians will pay a cost as Hamas is targeted. This is unavoidable.

I take no pleasure in it. I even understand criticism of it. But I won't accept moralizing judgment for it.
