  1. PS For more ways to celebrate Black History with film, we also recommend our Black History Collection.

This collection includes materials for teaching with hit global Black films like Chevalier (France), Searching for Amani (Kenya), and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (Malawi), as well as US Black History films like Hidden Figures, Just Mercy, and The Dhamma Brothers.

All of our teaching resources are free, and many of the films are available to stream for free as well.

  2. Richard Allestree, Anglican pastor, advises gentlemen. The saved cannot have too much anger at poverty. Nor deplore enough the inhumanity of the rich. One party suffers, the other sins. Invoking Luke 16, he says one’s suffering ends in eternal refreshments, but the other in endless torment.

Would some need to water this down with “not all rich”, as the Lausanne Movement did?

How can you sufficiently deplore that which should be deplored?

  3. Richard Ward, London preacher, considers an objection to Matthew 5:7. That is Lifeboat Ethics, which says there’s only so many to help and you must let the rest die. But thou must now relieve them.

Is this argument that Ward opposes here, one that is largely what the world teaches today? Leave them alone, focus on your spirituality and “obedience”?

How can you live out being merciful as Ward here interprets it?

  4. Calvin Mateer, Presbyterian missionary to China, is praised in a biography. He started a campaign to end foot-binding and fought opium use.

Today, do we hear complaints missionaries must focus on spirituality, and regular Christians focus on devotions that we never see needs outside our house. Do you think Mateer was only a social campaigner, or he opened hearts to the gospel?

    Is this witness more authentic?

  5. #JustMercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.

Bryan Stevenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system.
