  2. Life has been insane these past few weeks, so I often haven't been available for JP appointments. Nevertheless, this evening I saw my 2,000th client since becoming a JP! And last week, I administered my 4,500th document.

  3. I can tell it's going to be a busy week on the JP front. Being bombarded with texts first thing on a Monday morning!

Sadly not going to be a busy week on the acting front. I very nearly got offered a super exciting featured extra role in a feature film, but it wasn't to be. You win some and you lose some, but being shortlisted is an achievement in itself.

  4. Sigh. I probably could have run an entire JP appointment in French just now if I didn't respond to "Vous parlez français ?" with "un peu". With languages you've got to be bold! Seize the opportunity to speak another language! Don't be timid by sitting on your budding gift.

  5. My birthday week is proving fairly quiet on the JP front which is nice. I still have no idea how to anticipate when it's going to be a busy week versus a quiet one!

  6. As a JP, I see over 1,000 clients a year, often for large organisations that benefit from unpaid JP labour at scale:

    - Banks and lawyers outsource much of their identity verification to JPs.
    - Immigration NZ, the education sector, embassies, and many other public institutions depend on JPs to certify documents and get applications covered under the Oaths and Declarations Act.

And why wouldn't an organisation tap into this seemingly limitless source of unpaid labour?

  7. Not one but two other JPs recognised me and came over to say hi at Decult Conference. Do all us ex-cultists have an overcommitment problem and end up becoming JPs?

  8. Coincidentally, if you look them up in the Charitable Trusts Register you'll see I'm the JP who witnessed their application for incorporation. One of five charitable trust incorporation applications I've had the pleasure of witnessing as a JP.

  9. 2degrees messaging seems to be going a bit haywire today. I've received the same messages from some of my JP clients multiple times, with no idea if the first delivery was delayed. The last time I remember messaging being like this was the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011, but this time issues with RCS might be thrown into the mix?

  10. It flabbergasts me how many JP clients expect to come to my workplace in the city centre and get free parking.

  11. I just served my 1,000th JP client! I've also reached 42 weeks of service. Not too long to go until the one-year milestone.

  12. I talked about a lot of stuff with my MP on this Facebook live video (with the aim of encouraging people to consider becoming a JP). I'm not entirely sure how to feel about it but it's there if you want to have a watch. facebook.com/DuncanWebbLabour/

  13. I just administered my 2,000th document as a JP. It was for a migrant couple who were so lovely and so grateful. I've had a few really lovely clients today and it just makes all the difference. What a special privilege to serve the community!

I'm about to take a week's break while I head up north to visit family and attend a meeting.

  14. Obligatory new JP statistics graph which I posted on Facebook to try and inspire a few people to apply to be a JP and share the load 😁

  15. Yesterday I had a JP client who chose me because of my smile, and who thinks I should become a celebrant. Funny, I'd been mulling over the idea in only the past day or so.

  16. Night number one sleeping in my home for the next year! We're moving across the corridor to a neighbour's (larger) apartment, where I have a different view, a study for my many JP appointments, and room for my long-neglected digital piano!

  17. Has anyone had mobile issues today? I suspect that I received at least two text messages from JP clients several hours late today. Makes it hard for me to be prompt and professional if I don't know that I'm missing texts! I'm with 2degrees.

  18. I thought I was having a quiet week on the JP front. Then Friday came along (usually a quiet day) and suddenly WHAM! I'm seeing so many JP clients that I don't have time to put them in my calendar beforehand or log them in my spreadsheet straight afterwards. Kind of winging being in the right place at the right time and hoping I haven't forgotten anyone. Ten clients so far, on top of my dayjob and other commitments, with more still to come this evening.

  19. In my first six months of service as a JP I had 462 appointments, served 497 clients, and administered 1,122 documents. Today I'll almost certainly serve my 500th client.

    #JusticeOfThePeace

  20. Today (well, yesterday) I had my 400th appointment and administered my 1,000th document.

  21. This is a sustainable trend for unpaid volunteer work, right?

  22. Being a JP is a funny business. Last weekend I didn't see a single client. This Saturday morning I'm being flooded with phonecalls and texts.

    #JusticeOfThePeace

  23. On the plus side, not a single person needed my JP services this weekend and I'm taking that as a win.

In a funny reflection across time, I have 17th-century JPs to thank for some of the information I looked at tonight.

  24. I just saw my 300th JP client. Back from holiday and keeping busy!

  25. To buy a copier* or not to buy a copier. That is the question!

My JP operations would run smoother but I can't charge people printing costs.

  26. I just had my 200th JP appointment since I started in October! Usually I have about 14 appointments a week, but this has been a bumper week with 27 appointments so far and the weekend hasn't even started!

  27. Becoming a #JusticeOfThePeace, I was frustrated by the lack of information online about other people’s experiences. Hopefully my new #blog post changes that. remarks.nz/becoming-a-jp/

  28. My partner's resident visa got issued today! It's hard to appreciate how stressful the process is until you've been close to it. As a JP, the cool thing is I get to help other people through the same process every single week. #visa #immigration #JP #JusticeOfThePeace

  29. I've certified 91 copies and witnessed 13 statutory declarations, 3 affidavits, and 1 thumbprint – that's a total of 108 documents administered across 43 appointments in 21 days. #JusticeOfThePeace #JP

  30. This #graph is what happens when you appoint a data geek as a #JusticeOfThePeace…

So far I've done three weeks of service as a #JP and seen an average of two clients per day. Wednesday tends to be my busiest day (with several clients in the evening) and Saturday is my quietest (with no clients whatsoever).

Can you tell I'm not a morning person?

  31. By my estimation, I have performed weddings for one half of one percent of the people who live in my town (and many other people). I did one yesterday that was so quick I didn't even get a proper photo in. Just signed some paperwork, sent the young couple on their way. There are all sorts of ways to get married. #JusticeOfThePeace
