In 2019, #SCOTUS reversed the conviction of another #Black #Mississippi man, Curtis Flowers, whom #DougEvans also prosecuted in a capital murder case. Flowers was tried 6 times. The justices found, 7-2, that Evans — now retired — had worked relentlessly to keep Black people off the #jury.

For two decades, Pitchford had argued his conviction was not valid, pointing to what he said were racially biased selections of the jurors who heard the case. Only one of the 12 jurors was #Black — in a county that was 40% African American, according to Pitchford’s filings. More troubling, Pitchford says, is that those jurors were selected by #DougEvans, a prosecutor with a history of maneuvering to keep Black people off juries.

It is the second time #SCOTUS has effectively thrown out a #capital case after the same #Mississippi prosecutor was accused of excluding #Black #jurors.
Pitchford was convicted of murder in 2006 & sentenced to death by a jury in Mississippi. It was his partner who fatally shot shop owner Reuben Britt with a .22-caliber pistol during the armed robbery, acc/to court filings. Pitchford, who was 18 at the time of the robbery, was accused of being an accomplice.

The judge overseeing the #HunterBiden case is nearly done w/ #JurySelection, having narrowed the field down to 32 potential candidates, from which defense lawyers & prosecutors will use peremptory challenges to end up w/a dozen #jurors & 4 alternates. It is increasingly likely that jury selection, which began Monday morning, will finish by the afternoon.

A man set himself on fire on Friday afternoon near the Lower Manhattan #courthouse where #JurySelection continued in the #criminal #trial of #Trump.
The man doused himself w/a liquid around 1:35PM ET in Collect Pond Park, across the street from the courthouse. Onlookers screamed as bright orange flames engulfed the man. It was unclear what motivated his action.

The prospective #jurors left for the lawyers discussion, some may be brought back in for individual interviews. The defense & the prosecution may both seek to strike jurors "for cause." If they can't do so, they will use their limited number of peremptory challenges, which allow them to excuse jurors w/o a reason.
Those who survive challenges will be seated on the jury unless this process has given them the concerns articulated above.

#Trump's lawyer, Susan Necheles, confronted many prospective #jurors about their #socialmedia activity, clearly the lawyers know things about them, a lot of which was not stuff they were asked in open court. They clearly have people doing deep dives on these people. It’d be pretty hard to not have concerns that their identities will be *leaked*

Another prospective juror interviewed by Necheles, says she is very "centrist." She says she appreciates #democracy & a diversity of #political opinion. But, says, "I really don't think this case is about my #personal politics, this case is ultimately about the #evidence & the #facts presented." She concludes by saying that her family background "comes from #totalitarian regimes," & that bc of that, she believes in "innocent until proven guilty."

One juror said she fiercely disagrees w/ #Trump politically but has no feelings personally.
Necheles asked if the prospective juror's husband had written a ‘book opinion’ about Trump. The juror said that her husband does write book reviews.

She questioned the #credibility of those who are expected to testify against Trump, & made a reference to #MichaelCohen, suggesting that some #witnesses might want to seek “revenge” (the title of a Cohen books) on Trump. Cohen’s book is specifically named on the questionnaire.
Trump gives the hairy eyeball to jurors when Necheles suggests that a witness may be lying if they change the details of their story.
