A single day after President Kennedy’s national address from the Oval Office proposing a Civil Rights Act in 1963, Medgar Evers, the first field secretary for the Mississippi NAACP was shot, in cold blood, in front of his home in Jackson.
The murderer, a Ku Klux Klansman named Byron de la Beckwith, was not brought to justice until 1994, through three separate murder trials, the first two ending in hung juries. He was 73 years old when convicted of the 1963 murder, and died, at the age of 80, still serving his life sentence.
The evidence that tipped the scales of justice was that de la Beckwith bragged about killing Evers at KKK rallies in the interim between his second trial and the third court case in ‘94.
