  4. Joe Jackson’s Jumpin’ Jive, Jumpin’ Jive, 1981 on A&M

    Joe Jackson always seemed to me a bit like someone out of the wrong time – though I loved his new wave / new romantic era and azz inflected records, on this one he went full on 1940s, covering songs from the swing and jump blues era.

    Some people feel like it is a gimmick album or a throwaway, but I really enjoy it – it may be done a bit tongue in cheek but these are musicians (Jackson included) who love this music and take it seriously.

    My copy—via Academy Records in NYC—is a Terre Haute pressing from the early 80s.

  10. Zapomeňte na akademický jazz. Happy Home Blues vás vezme do klubů poválečného L.A. Znovu oživí groove tehdejšího západního pobřeží – od svižných instrumentálek po houpavé vokální skvosty. #BuddyBanks sázel tóny s elegancí i šťávou. Zapomenutý saxofonista, který měl vlastní styl – a kapelu, co hrála jako o život.

  13. 🎶 👯👯👯
    How far back does Carolina beach music go? There's a legend that connects it to events in 1948, but the early days remain hazy.

    🗓️ We do know that by the 1950s, captivating music produced by Black artists, like jump blues and proto rock and roll, started to be played in juke boxes along the Carolina coast, centered in the Myrtle Beach area.

    👯 At the time known as "race records" in the segregated south, this music was not easily available to whites elsewhere. But when it was played, it was addictive and compelled people of all colors to get on the dance floor.

    For example, see if you can sit still listening to this one from 1948:

  15. I love me some triple and even quadruple rhyme. But possibly the apotheosis of multiple rhyme is Vaughn Horton, Denver Darling, and Milt Gabler's "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie", first recorded by Louis Jordan in 1946.

    If you were to analyze its rhyme scheme, it'd be AAAAAA in the verses, then BBBA in the chorus. Except that the 2nd and 3rd verses are *also* AAAAAA, not CCCCCCC... that is to say, *every single verse line in the entire song* ends in an -ack sound! 1/2

  16. #Listening to a collection of music recorded by Louis Jordan and friends, between 1956 and 1957;

    https://yewtube/watch?v=l1eD1B0gNFA

    Jordan was an exponent of a jazzy blues subgenre known as 'jump blues', one of the formative influences on rock'n'roll pioneers like Chuck Berry. The upbeat tempos and jaunty horn lines of jump blues likely influenced later styles like Jamaican ska.

  17. How did I get to the point in my life where it took trying to listen to every Eddie Bo song to discover that he wrote the song that turned into Little Richard’s Slippin’ and a Slidin’ in the same year??

    youtu.be/NUyj5f3loME?si=hfwCHD

    It’s literally listed on the Wikipedia page. Al Collins originally wrote it as ‘I’ve got the blues for you’, and while it shares some of the same DNA it’s less recognizable:
