Every migration season, the townspeople sprinkle cracked corn over the graves of those who have passed away since the last migration season. It's food for the soul geese.

If the geese eat corn from a grave, it means they've #judged the soul worthy and will carry the soul with them when they take flight, and the family can rest easy. But if the geese shun the corn laid out--or worse, if a family fails to scatter any--then the soul must linger in the cold earth.
